Carbon nanotube metamaterial

Context :

Metamaterials are artificials materials, nanostructured at the nanoscale but displaying homogeneous effective optical properties at the wavelength-scale of the incident light. The effective optical properties could display unusual behavior, such as negative refractive index or dielectric constant equal to zero.
This internship propose to explore the realization of such a metamaterial using metallic carbon nanotubes, in order to realize a “dilute” metal. This kind of metamaterial could be an essential component of optical nano-antenna in the visible and near infrared range, to perform similar operations than traditional antennas in the radio or micro-wave range.
Scientific and technical work :
The goal of this internship is to realize and study the optical properties of the metamaterial. There is in a first time a step to realize samples (carbon nanotube purification in order to obtain a sufficiently rich solution of metallic carbon nanotubes, dilution of these carbon nanotubes into a resist, realization of a thin layer of the “dilute” metal). The samples will be characterized by optical absorption and Raman spectroscopies. The optical properties of the metamaterial will then be determined using a frustrated total internal reflexion experiment to obtain the surface plasmon resonance.
Depending on time and the student wish, this internship could be oriented either toward the modelization of the metamaterial effective optical properties, or toward the realisation of nanoscale antenna to enhance quantum dots (typically PbS) photoluminescence in the near infra-red.

Profil :
This project is adapted for a student with a background in photonics, optics or fundamental physics. Prior knowledge of carbon nanotube science is not necessary. The internship involve substantial experimental work for sample preparation and use of free space optical setup, so the taste for experimental work is mandatory. An interest for material modelisation could be cultivated during the internship. Strong taste for interdisciplinary research and learning new stuff is also essential. This internship will ideally be extended into a cutting-edge PhD project, to develop an interdisciplinary profile that is widely sought for in today’s research.
