Master 2 “In situ optical imaging and Raman spectroscopy of individual carbon nanotubes grown on monocrystalline substrate”

Research project
The growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with controlled electronic properties (e.g. metal or semiconductor type) would represent a major scientific breakthrough. The objective of this project is to understand and control the fundamental processes governing selectivity during the growth of nanotubes.
The recruited M2 trainee will grow individual CNTs aligned on a substrate, study their growth kinetics using a unique optical imaging setup, and then determine their structure and properties by Raman spectroscopy. All experimental facilities are fully operational and available for the project. He/she will also work in close collaboration with theorists and microscopists from other laboratories (Cinam, CEA Grenoble) as part of a research consortium funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR DARWIN).

We are looking for a Master 2 student in physics, physical chemistry or materials science, motivated by a research subject at the frontiers of physics and chemistry and by the pursuit of a PhD thesis. Candidates with high motivation, experimental rigor, taste for experimental work, analytical skills and communication skills in English are strongly encouraged to apply.
Note that 3 years of funding is available for a continuation of the research in PhD thesis.

Main techniques used :
- Growth of carbon nanotubes by Chemical Vapor Deposition
- In situ optical imaging by homodyne polarization microscopy
- Resonance Raman spectroscopy at various laser wavelengths

Duration : 5-6 months
