Résumé: We use X-Ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy to investigate the structural relaxation process in a metallic glass on the atomic length scale. We report evidence for a dynamical crossover between the supercooled liquid phase and the metastable glassy state, suggesting different origins of the relaxation process across the transition. Furthermore, using different cooling rates we observe a complex hierarchy of dynamic processes characterized by distinct aging regimes. Strong analogies with the aging dynamics of soft glassy materials, such as gels and concentrated colloidal suspensions, point at stress relaxation as a universal mechanism driving the relaxation dynamics of out-of-equilibrium systems.

Résumé: We have performed off axis heterodyne holography with very weak illumination by recording holograms of the object with and without object illumination in the same acquisition run. We have experimentally studied , how the reconstructed image signal (with illumination) and noise background (without) scale with the holographic acquisition and reconstruction parameters that are the number of frames, and the number of pixels of the reconstruction spatial filter. The first parameter is related to the frequency bandwidth of detection in time, the second one to the bandwidth in space. The signal to background ratio varies roughly like the inverse of the bandwidth in time and space. We have also compared the noise background with the theoretical shot noise background calculated by Monte Carlo simulation. The experimental and Monte Carlo noise background agree very well together.

Résumé: Swap transactions: Bidirectional spontaneous transfer of gold nanoparticles coated with stimuli-responsive polymer brushes across oil-water interfaces has been implemented. The water-to-oil transfer of the gold nanoparticles is dictated by the ionic strength in water, while the nanoparticle oil-to-water transfer occurs only when the environmental temperature is reduced below 5 °C.

Résumé: Acousto-optical coherence tomography (AOCT) consists in using random phase jumps on ultrasound and light to achieve a millimeter resolution when imaging thick scattering media. We combined this technique with heterodyne off-axis digital holography. Two-dimensional images of absorbing objects embedded in scattering phantoms are obtained with a good signal-to-noise ratio. We study the impact of the phase modulation characteristics on the amplitude of the acousto-optic signal and on the contrast and apparent size of the absorbing inclusion.

Résumé: We propose here to combine sideband holography with stroboscopic illumination synchronized with the vibration of an object. By sweeping the optical frequency of the reference beam such a way the holographic detection is tuned on the successive sideband harmonic ranks, we are able to image the instantaneous velocities of the object. Since the stroboscopic illumination is made with an electronic device, the method is compatible with fast (up to several MHz) vibration motions. The method is demonstrated with a vibrating clarinet reed excited sinusoidally at 2 kHz, and a stroboscopic illumination with cyclic ratio 0.15. Harmonic rank up to n = ±100 are detected, and a movie of the instantaneous velocities is reported.

Defect coalescence in spherical nematic shells
Auteur(s): Lopez-Leon T., Bates Martin a., Fernandez-nieves Alberto
(Article) Publié:
Physical Review E: Statistical, Nonlinear, And Soft Matter Physics, vol. 86 p.030702 (2012)
Résumé: We study coalescence of topological defects in nematic liquid crystals confined to spherical shells using both
experiments and computer simulations. We observe that the four s = +1
2 defects that are present due to topological
constraints imposed by the spherical geometry coalesce by pairs after changing the molecular orientation at the
outer surface from tangential to perpendicular; the result is the formation of two single s = +1 defects. It is
noteworthy that the speed of the coalescence process is peaked when the defects are at opposite points on the
equator of the shell; this maximum results from the thickness inhomogeneity of the shells.

Résumé: Graphene oxide (GO) flakes dissolved in water can spontaneously form liquid crystals. Liquid crystallinity presents an opportunity to process graphene materials into macroscopic assemblies with long-range ordering, but most graphene electronic functionalities are lost in oxidation treatments. Reduction of GO allows recovering functionalities and makes reduced graphene oxide (RGO) of greater interest. Unfortunately, chemical reduction of GO generally results in the aggregation of the flakes, with no liquid crystallinity observed. We report in the present work liquid crystals made of RGO. The addition of surfactants in appropriate conditions is used to stabilize the RGO flakes against aggregation maintaining their ability to form water-based liquid crystals. Structural and thermodynamical studies allow the dimensions of the flakes to be deduced. It is found that the thickness and diameter of RGO flakes are close to that of neat GO flakes.
