Le corannulène C20H10 est une molécule en forme de coupelle composée de cycles pentagonaux et hexagonaux appartenant à la famille des polyarènes géodésiques. Les nano-molécules de polyarènes géodésiques peuvent s’organiser dans la formation de cristaux moléculaires. Dans le cas du corannulène, la structure du cristal a été reportée pour la première fois en 1976, [1] comme appartenant à au groupe d’espace monoclinique P21c puis cette structure a été récemment confirmée [2]. Dans cette structure la cellule unité est composée de deux molécules se présentant dans deux orientations différentes de manière inclinée par rapport à l’axe de symétrie de la molécule. Quelques travaux reportent l’étude du corannulène par spectroscopie vibrationnelle, mais la plupart de ces travaux sont bases sur des simulations [3,4]. Les spectroscopies vibrationnelles s’avèrent être des outils très intéressants pour étudier de telles molécules. En effet, de part leur courbure, les polyarènes géodésiques sont très différentes des molécules planes ou des cages rigides : la nature des liaisons est très différente. Par ailleurs, les interactions avec l’environnement peuvent entraîner une distorsion de la molécule et donc une brisure de symétrie donnant ainsi naissance à des modes de vibration auparavant interdits. Dans ce travail, nous nous sommes intéressés à l’influence de la température et de la pression sur les modes de vibration des molécules de corannulène, comment ces modes évoluent-ils ? voit-on apparaître de nouveaux modes? La spectroscopie vibrationnelle est également très sensible à la structure des cristaux moléculaires notamment au travers des modes Raman basses fréquences. Comment cette structure évolue-t-elle avec la température et la pression ? Quelles sont les interactions entre les molécules dans ces cristaux et comment évoluent-elles ? Nous montrerons que les outils spectroscopiques apportent déjà des premières réponses à ces questions.

A strong and universal piezoresistive effect is evidenced for individual metallic carbon nanotubes contacted to gold electrodes through high contact resistances. The effect is well explained through a pressure modulation of the tunnel barrier width at the contact. The pressure dependence (−16%/GPa) is much stronger than for standard resistive high pressure gauges, and it depends neither on the initial resistance nor on the pressure transmitting medium.

A transistor based on an individual multiwalled carbon nanotube is studied under high-pressure up to 1 GPa. Dramatic effects are observed, such as the lowering of the Schottky barrier at the gold-nanotube contacts, the enhancement of the intertube conductance, including a discontinuity related to a structural transition, and the decrease of the gate hysteresis of the device.

We review the main information that we have obtained from combined Raman spectroscopy and electron diffraction experiments on individual free-standing single-walled carbon nanotubes. This information concerns: the radial breathing mode vs. diameter relationship; the dependence of the frequency and lineshape of the G-modes in semiconducting and metallic tubes; the evaluation of the optical transition energies for individual free-standing SWNTs. From these data, we can define Raman criteria allowing the indexing of carbon nanotubes from their Raman features only. We show the efficiency of this approach to assign the (n,m) indices of individual chiral and achiral single-walled carbon nanotubes. These criteria are also applied to identify tubes grown on a substrate from a single wavelength Raman experiments. A decrease of nanotube yield is usually observed at high temperature. Here, we report on the origins of the activation and deactivation of the SWCNT growth in this high temperature range (between 700 degrees C and 850 degrees C) based on in situ Raman measurements. We observed that, at high temperature, carbon precursors such as ethanol and methane readily reduce metal oxide such as Co3O4. Once reduced, the size distribution of the catalyst particles quickly evolves at high temperature leading to a dramatic deactivation of the nanotube growth. An oxidizing pre-treatment has a stabilizing effect on the catalyst. In addition, we evidenced a threshold partial pressure of the carbon precursor to initiate the growth. This threshold partial pressure sets a second requirement for activating the nanotube growth in addition to the requirement of reducing the catalyst. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
