The variety of H bond (HB) interactions is a source of inspiration for bottom-up molecular engineering through self-aggregation. Non-conventional intermolecular HBs between N,N0disubstituted urea and thiourea are studied in detail by vibrational spectroscopies and ab initio calculations. Raman and IR mode assignments are given. We show that it is possible to study selectively the different intermolecular bifurcated intra-and inter-dimer HBs with the two types of HB acceptors. Through the ab initio calculation, the thioamide I mode, a specific marker of N-H … S=C HB interactions, is unambiguously identified.

Biodegradable plastics appear as one promising means to help solving the increasing issue of environmental pollution by plastics. The present study aims at comparing the biodegradation mechanisms of two promising biodegradable plastics, PHBV Poly(3hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) and PBSA Poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) with the objective to provide a better understanding of the mechanisms involved and identify the most relevant indicators to follow biodegradation. For this purpose, the progress of the biodegradation process was monitored under controlled composting conditions at the laboratory scale at 58°C using several methodological approaches for evaluating polymer degradation. Taylor dispersion analysis (TDA) is a powerful sizing technique very well suited for (macro)molecules between angstroms and submicrons (typically up to 200 nm). However, new detection modes are required for non-UV-absorbing (macro)molecules such as most of the polysaccharides, including starches. In this work, two different detection modes were compared, backscattering interferometry (BSI) and UV-photooxidation detection (UV-POD). TDA-BSI measures the relative change of the refractive index between eluent and sample (water as eluent in this work), whereas TDA-UV-POD detects the UV-absorbing photo-oxidized products of polysaccharides/starches in strong alkaline media (130 mM NaOH or 1 M KOH). TDA-UV-POD detection was evaluated for linearity and sensitivity at two wavelengths, 214 and 266 nm. The mass-average hydrodynamic radius (Rh) obtained by TDA-BSI and TDA-UV-POD was found to be in excellent agreement, whereas higher average Rh values were obtained by batch dynamic light scattering (DLS) under the same conditions, because of the higher sensitivity of DLS to large-size solutes and aggregates. The hydrodynamic radius distributions obtained by TDA and DLS are intrinsically different but both techniques were found to be complementary, providing useful information on sample dispersity. Owing to the absence of the stationary phase, low sample consumption with straightforward sample preparation (no filtration), and no calibration, TDA is anticipated to become a method of choice for the size-based characterization of polysaccharides, including starches.

The standard lore has it that supersymmetry breaking in the visible sector is always soft when mediated by gravity from a hidden sector of Supergravity.Correspondingly, the associated generic forms of the superpotential and Kahler potential have long been the basis for the construction of consistent low energy susy models. In this talk we report on the existence of a whole class of new forms, equally consistent for low energy susy model building, but exhibiting hard susy breaking on top of the usual soft one. Moreover, these new forms require Standard Model gauge singlet chiral superfields displaying specific structures and flat directions. We discuss briefly the possible phenomenological spin-offs regarding the 125GeV Higgs fine-tuning issues and the (so far) non-discovery of susy particles, as well as next-to-minimal susy inflationary model-building. Separation efficiency is ideally controlled by molecular diffusion in capillary electrophoresis (CE). However, other adverse phenomena, such as solute adsorption on capillary surface, tend to increase the peak dispersion. An interesting alternative to limit the solute adsorption is to avoid as much as possible the contact of the solute with the capillary surface by elaborating superhydrophobic (SH) coatings on fused silica capillary surfaces. This work describes an optimized protocol to get non-wettable SH coating using hydrophobically modified silica nanoparticle suspensions (Glaco TM), based on simple capillary flushes and thermal stabilization. In this protocol, the control of the air flushing after the introduction of the Glaco TM suspension in the capillary was found crucial to get optimized coating coverage and reproducibility. The SH coating was characterized by ellipsometry, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, contact angle (about 159°) and the observation of the meniscus of water in the coated capillary. The hydrodynamic behavior of the SH coated capillary was investigated by plotting the Poiseuille law. Finally, electrophoretic separations of a peptide mixture in acidic conditions demonstrated the interest of this approach with an increase by a factor 2 of the separation efficiency compared to fused silica capillary.

Nanofilms of thickness of about two nanometers have been formed at the air-water interface using functionalized castor oil (ICO) with cross-linkable silylated groups. These hybrid films represent excellent candidates for replacing conventional polymeric materials in biomedical applications, but they need to be optimized in terms of biocompatibility which is highly related to protein adsorption. Neutron reflectivity has been used to study the adsorption of two model proteins, bovine serum albumin and lysozyme, at the silylated oil (ICO)-water interface in the absence and presence of salt at physiologic ionic strength and pH and at different protein concentrations. These measurements are compared to adsorption at the air-water interface. While salt enhances adsorption by a similar degree at the air-water and the oil-water interface, the impact of the oil film is significant, with adsorption at the oil-water interface three-to four-fold higher compared to the air-water interface. Under these conditions, the concentration profiles of the adsorbed layers for both proteins indicate multilayer adsorption: The thickness of the outer layer (oil-side) is close to the dimension of the minor axis of the protein molecule, ~ 30 Å, suggesting a side-way orientation with the long axis parallel to the interface. The inner layer extends to 55-60 Å. Interestingly, in all cases, the composition of oil film remains intact without significant protein penetration into the film. The optimal adsorption on these nanofilms, 1.7-2.0 mg•m-2 , is comparable to the results obtained recently on thick solid cross-linked films using quartz crystal microbalance and atomic force microscopy, showing in particular that adsorption at these ICO film interfaces under standard physiological conditions is non-specific. These results furnish useful information towards the elaboration of vegetable oil-based nanofilms, in direct nanoscale applications or as precursor films in the fabrication of thicker macroscopic films for biomedical applications. 2
