In recent years, uorescent nanodiamond (fND) particles containing nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers gained recognition as an attractive probe for nanoscale cellular imaging and quantum sensing. For these applications, precise localization of fNDs inside of a living cell is essential. Here we propose such a method by simultaneous detection of the signal from the NV centers and the spectroscopic Raman signal from the cells to visualize the nucleus of living cells. However, we show that the commonly used Raman cell signal from the ngerprint region is not suitable for organelle imaging in this case. Therefore, we develop a method for nucleus visualization exploiting the region-speci c shape of C-H stretching mode and further use k-means cluster analysis to chemically distinguish the vicinity of fNDs. Our technique enables, within a single scan, to detect fNDs, distinguish by chemical localization whether they have been internalized into cell and simultaneously visualize cell nucleus without any labeling or cell- xation. We show for the rst time spectral colocalization of unmodi ed high-pressure high-temperature fND probes with the cell nucleus. Our methodology can be, in principle, extended to any red- and near-infrared-luminescent cell-probes and is fully compatible with quantum sensing measurements in living cells.

Time-resolved photoluminescence and light-induced transient grating techniques were applied for temperature and excitation dependent internal quantum efficiency and carrier diffusion investigation in silicon-doped epilayer and AlxGa1-xN MQWs (x > 0.6). Decrease of photoluminescence efficiency at high excitations correlated with increase of diffusion coefficient as well as nonradiative recombination rate, indicating excitation and temperature dependent localized exciton density reduction. Excitation-dependent lifetime decrease was less pronounced than the corresponding drop of the time-integrated photoluminescence efficiency dominated by thermal dissociation of excitons. At lowest excitations excitons were found captured to vacancy complexes. With increase of excitation exciton ionization appeared, leading to enhanced nonradiative recombination of holes on aluminum vacancies and simultaneous droop of PL efficiency due to saturated bimolecular free carrier plasma recombination. At initial recombination stages and high excitations diffusive recombination on dislocations was also revealed. Modelling provided free exciton binding energies of 104, 140 meV in the MQWs and in the layer; exciton localization energies in 12-35 meV range; localized exciton lifetimes in 2-4 ns range; free exciton and carrier radiative recombination rate coefficients of rex = (0.6 0.2)109(T/300)-1 1/s and Brad = (7 1)10-10(T/300)-3/2 cm3/s, respectively. Vacancy complex capture cross section for excitons was determined to be = (2 1)10-16(300/T)2 cm2. Electron and hole capture cross sections to aluminum vacancy were modeled (1.5 1)10-13 cm2 and (7 1)10-13 cm2, respectively. Dislocation Coulomb radius for free carrier recombination was found to be 12-15 nm.

We investigate the possibility of spatially and spectrally controlling the thermal infrared emission by exploitation of the Yagi–Uda antenna design. Hybrid antennas composed of both SiC and Au rods are considered and the contributions of emission from all the elements, at a given equilibrium temperature, are taken into account. We show that the detrimental effect due to thermal emission from the not ideal parasitic elements drastically affect the performances of conventional thermal Au antennas in the 12 μm wavelength range. Nevertheless, our results show that the hybrid approach allows the development of efficient narrow-band and high directivity sources. The possibility of exploiting the Yagi-Uda design both in transmission and in reception modes, may open the way to the realization of miniaturized, efficient, robust and cheap sensor devices for mass-market applications.

This paper presents investigations on the generalized laws of refraction and reflection for metasurfaces made of diffractive elements. It introduces a phenomenological model that reproduces all the features of the experiments dedicated to the generalized Snell-Descartes laws. Our main finding is that the generalized laws of refrac-tion and reflection as previously stated have to be modified in order to describe the propagation of light through metasurfaces made of diffractive elements. We provide the appropriate laws that take a different form depending on the properties of the metasurface. Our models apply to both periodic and non-periodic metasurfaces. We show that the generalized law of refraction strictly exists only for linear-phase profiles and sawtooth-wave phase profiles under constraints that we specify. It can be approximatively defined for non-linear phase profiles. This document includes the article as the part I and the supporting informations as the part II.

Soft porous crystals undergo large structural transformations under a variety of physical stimuli. Breathing-like transformations, occurring with a large volume change, have been associated with an existence of bi-stable or multi-stable crystal structures. Here, we provide a detailed, multiscale qualitative and quantitative analysis of the adsorption-induced “breathing” transformations in two metal organic frameworks (MOFs): MIL-53(Al) which is a reference case of our approach, and recently synthetized JUK-8, which does not show any bistability without adsorbate. The proposed approach is based on atomistic simulations and does not require any empirical or adjustable parameters. It allows for a prediction of potential structural transformations in MOF and, in the case of adsorption-induced deformations, a calculation of the adsorption stress. We also show that the quantitative agreement between calculated and experimental results critically depends on the quality of the dispersion energy correction.
