Intracranial vasculopathies are routinely investigated by lumen-based modalities such as magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), computed tomography angiography (CTA), and digital subtraction angiography (DSA). These techniques are useful to analyze the vessel lumen, allowing to detect vessel stenosis or occlusion. However, the primum movins of the disease, i.e., an abnormal thickening of the vessel wall, remains within the arterial wall. The vasculopathy can moreover be present without always narrowing the lumen or modifying its regularity. Hence, there is a need to detect directly and analyze vessel wall abnormalities. Development of 3D high-resolution black blood sequences for intracranial vessel wall MR imaging (VW-MRI) enabled routine clinical applications not only vasculitis, but also of intracranial atherosclerotic disease (ICAD), intracranial dissections, reversible intracranial dissections, reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS), Moyamoya disease, and intracranial aneurysms. This high-resolution intracranial VW- MRI approach is increasingly used on a clinical basis at many centers to solve diagnostic problems, especially in patients with ischemic stroke or intracranial hemorrhage. An expert consensus Guideline from the American Society of Neuroradiology provides recommendations for clinical implementation of intracranial vessel wall MRI. There are several technical aspects needed to be considered when implementing VW-MRI in intracranial vessels, including flow suppression, both in blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this article, we review the technical aspects of VW-MRI, and recommend applications for vascular diseases including non-occlusive intracranial vasculopathies, Moyamoya disease, and identifying culprit plaques. We also give a focus on the utility of VW-MRI for determining stroke etiology in adults and in children and young adults.

During embryogenesis of all vertebrates, haematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) extrude from the aorta by a complex process named endothelial-to-haematopoietic transition (EHT). HSPCs will then colonize haematopoietic organs allowing haematopoiesis throughout adult life. The mechanism underlying EHT including the role of each aortic endothelial cell (EC) within the global aorta dynamics remains unknown. In the present study, we show for the first time that EHT involves the remodelling of individual cells within a collective migration of ECs which is tightly orchestrated, resulting in HSPCs extrusion in the sub-aortic space without compromising aorta integrity. By performing a cross-disciplinary study which combines high-resolution 4D imaging and theoretical analysis based on the concepts of classical mechanics, we propose that this complex developmental process is dependent on mechanical instabilities of the aorta preparing and facilitating the extrusion of HSPCs.

We use the advent of reliable ultrafast optical techniques to explore acoustic modes in glasses in the difficult but crucial frequency region between around 0.1 and 1 THz. Brillouin scattering of light allows to measure velocity and absorption of sound up to frequencies around 100 GHz and coherent inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) is limited to frequencies larger than 1 THz. A rather universal property of glasses is that a large excess of modes exists, with a maximum density of states near 1 THz, forming the so-called boson peak. The acoustic modes are expected to be strongly affected as their frequency nears the boson peak. The onset of this effect, which is expected to be dominant in the 0.5 to 1 THz range, is observed here for the first time in v-SiO2 as a function of temperature.

Les matériaux antiferromagnétiques (AF) suscitent actuellement un intérêt considérable pour la conception de futurs dispositifs spintroniques à faible coût énergétique et ultra-rapides. Cependant, l’exploration de ces matériaux novateurs se heurte à des défis d’imagerie magnétique : la plupart des techniques conventionnelles de microscopie magnétique en espace réel ne peuvent pas sonder l'ordre AF aux échelles nanométriques, en raison de la compensation des moments magnétiques donnant lieu à des signaux magnétiques extrêmement faibles. Il s'agit d'un obstacle majeur à la compréhension fondamentale de l'ordre AF à l'échelle nanométrique et de sa réponse à des stimuli externes, tels que des courants polarisés en spin ou des champs électriques. Afin d’exploiter le potentiel des matériaux AF dans une nouvelle génération de dispositifs spintroniques, les capacités de contrôle et d'imagerie à l'échelle nanométrique, qui sont désormais courantes pour l’étude des matériaux ferromagnétiques, doivent être étendues aux matériaux AF. Nous prouvons dans cette thèse que la magnétométrie à balayage basée sur un défaut azote-lacune (NV) dans le diamant, convient parfaitement à l'imagerie d'ordres AF complexes à l'échelle nanométrique, sous conditions ambiantes.Un matériau prometteur pour la spintronique AF est le BiFeO3 (BFO), un multiferroïque opérant à température ambiante dans lequel l'ordre AF est intimement lié à l'ordre ferroélectrique via le couplage magnétoélectrique. La magnétométrie NV démontre ici sa capacité à imager l'ordre AF cycloïdal dans BFO en cartographiant le champ magnétique de fuite qu'il produit. Il permet également de déduire des grandeurs caractéristiques telles que la valeur du moment magnétique non compensé, mais aussi de visualiser en espace réel le lien intime entre les ordres ferroélectrique et AF. Afin que le BFO trouve sa place dans la conception de dispositifs spintroniques, les couches minces doivent être employées. L'effet de la contrainte épitaxiale sur l'ordre AF dans des couches minces de BFO est ici étudié. Il est montré que la contrainte et le contrôle électrique peuvent stabiliser une grande variété de textures de spin AF complexes dans les couches minces de BFO.Au delà d’imager le champ de fuite statique, nous montrons une nouvelle approche pour l'imagerie des textures AF qui consiste à cartographier le bruit magnétique qu'elles produisent localement plutôt que leurs champs magnétiques statiques. Cette technique exploite la forte dépendance de la photoluminescence du défaut NV sur les fluctuations magnétiques à la fréquence de résonance de spin du centre NV. Comme preuve de principe de l'efficacité de cette technique, les propriétés ajustables des antiferromagnétiques synthétiques qui hébergent des ondes de spins sont exploitées, pour stabiliser différentes textures de spin. Ces textures AF telles que les parois de domaine, les spirales de spin et les skyrmions AF sont imagées par cette technique nouvelle de relaxométrie.

Given its potential for integration and scalability, silicon is likely to be a key platform for large-scale quantum technologies. Individual electron-encoded artificial atoms, formed by either impurities or quantum dots, have emerged as a promising solution for silicon-based integrated quantum circuits. However, single qubits featuring an optical interface, which is needed for long-distance exchange of information, have not yet been isolated in silicon. Here we report the isolation of single optically active point defects in a commercial silicon-on-insulator wafer implanted with carbon atoms. These artificial atoms exhibit a bright, linearly polarized single-photon emission with a quantum efficiency of the order of unity. This single-photon emission occurs at telecom wavelengths suitable for long-distance propagation in optical fibres. Our results show that silicon can accommodate single isolated optical point defects like in wide-bandgap semiconductors, despite a small bandgap (1.1 eV) that is unfavourable for such observations.
