We investigate the structure of gluten polymer-like gels in a binary mixture of water/ethanol, $50/50$ v/v, a good solvent for gluten proteins. Gluten comprises two main families of proteins, monomeric gliadins and polymer glutenins. In the semi-dilute regime, scattering experiments highlight two classes of behavior, akin to standard polymer solution and polymer gel, depending on the protein composition. We demonstrate that these two classes are encoded in the structural features of the proteins in very dilute solution, and are correlated with the presence of proteins assemblies of typical size tens of nanometers. The assemblies only exist when the protein mixture is sufficiently enriched in glutenins. They are found directly associated to the presence in the gel of domains enriched in non-exchangeable H-bonds and of size comparable to that of the protein assemblies. The domains are probed in neutron scattering experiments thanks to their unique contrast. We show that the sample visco-elasticity is also directly correlated to the quantity of domains enriched in H-bonds, showing the key role of H-bonds in ruling the visco-elasticity of polymer gluten gels.

The thin film of life that inhabits all plastics in the oceans, so-called “plastisphere,” has multiple effects on the fate and impacts of plastic in the marine environment. Here, we aimed to evaluate the relative influence of the plastic size, shape, chemical composition, and environmental changes such as a phytoplankton bloom in shaping the plastisphere abundance, diversity and activity. Polyethylene (PE) and polylactide acid (PLA) together with glass controls in the forms of meso-debris (18 mm diameter) and large-microplastics (LMP; 3 mm diameter), as well as small-microplastics (SMP) of 100 μm diameter with spherical or irregular shapes were immerged in seawater during 2 months. Results of bacterial abundance (confocal microscopy) and diversity (16S rRNA Illumina sequencing) indicated that the three classical biofilm colonization phases (primo-colonization after 3 days; growing phase after 10 days; maturation phase after 30 days) were not influenced by the size and the shape of the materials, even when a diatom bloom (Pseudo-nitzschia sp.) occurred after the first month of incubation. However, plastic size and shape had an effect on bacterial activity (3H leucine incorporation). Bacterial communities associated with the material of 100 μm size fraction showed the highest activity compared to all other material sizes. A mature biofilm developed within 30 days on all material types, with higher bacterial abundance on the plastics compared to glass, and distinct bacterial assemblages were detected on each material type. The diatom bloom event had a great impact on the plastisphere of all materials, resulting in a drastic change in diversity and activity. Our results showed that the plastic size and shape had relatively low influence on the plastisphere abundance, diversity, and activity, as compared to the plastic composition or the presence of a phytoplankton bloom.

Conjugated polymer polypyrrole nanostructures modified with bimetallic (Pt–Ni) nanoparticles are very active for hydrogen generation and a synergetic effect is obtained by alloying Pt with Ni.

We investigate the delayed rupture of biopolymer gels under a constant shear load by simultaneous dynamic light scattering and rheology measurements. We unveil the crucial role of normal stresses built up during gelation: All samples that eventually fracture self-weaken during the gelation process, as revealed by a partial relaxation of the normal stress concomitant to a burst of microscopic plastic rearrangements.Upon applying a shear stress, weakened gels exhibit in the creep regime distinctive signatures in their microscopic dynamics, which anticipate macroscopic fracture by up to thousands of seconds. The dynamics in fracturing gels are faster than those of nonfracturing gels and exhibit large spatiotemporal fluctuations. A spatially localized region with significant plasticity eventually nucleates, expands progressively, and finally invades the whole sample, triggering macroscopic failure.

Polymerized ionic liquids (PolyILs) are promising candidates for a broad range of technologies. However, the relatively low conductivity of PolyILs at room temperature has strongly limited their applications. In this work, we provide new insights into the roles of various microscopic parameters controlling ion transport in these polymers, which are crucial for their rational design and practical applications. Using broadband dielectric spectroscopy and neutron and light scattering techniques, we found a clear connection between the activation energy for conductivity, fast dynamics, and high-frequency shear modulus in PolyILs at their glass transition temperature (Tg). In particular, our analysis reveals a correlation between conductivity and the amplitude of fast picosecond fluctuations at Tg, suggesting the possible involvement of fast dynamics in lowering the energy barrier for ion conductivity. We also demonstrate that both the activation energy for ion transport and the amplitude of the fast fluctuations depend on the high-frequency shear moduli of PolyILs, thus identifying a practically important parameter for tuning conductivity. The parameters recognized in this work and their connection to the ionic conductivity of PolyILs set the stage for a deeper understanding of the mechanism of ion transport in PolyILs in the glassy state.

Nematic twist-bend phases (N-TB) are new types of nematic liquid crystalline phases with attractive properties for future electro-optic applications. However, most of these states are monotropic or are stable only in a narrow high temperature range. They are often destabilized under moderate cooling, and only a few single compounds have shown to give room temperature N-TB phases. Mixtures of twist-bend nematic liquid crystals with simple nematogens have shown to strongly lower the nematic to N-TB phase transition temperature. Here, we examined the behaviour of new types of mixtures with the dimeric liquid crystal [4 ',4 '-(heptane-1,7-diyl)bis(([1 ',1 ''-biphenyl]4 ''-carbo-nitrile))] (CB7CB). This now well-known twist-bend nematic liquid crystal presents a nematic twist-bend phase below T approximate to 104 degrees C. Mixtures with other monomeric alkyl or alkoxy -biphenylcarbonitriles liquid crystals that display a smectic A (SmA) phase also strongly reduce this temperature. The most interesting smectogen is 4 '-Octyl-4-biphenylcarbonitrile (8CB), for which a long-term metastable N-TB phase is found at room and lower temperatures. This paper presents the complete phase diagram of the corresponding binary system and a detailed investigation of its thermal, optical, dielectric, and elastic properties.
