The anomalous magnetic moments of the muon and the electron in the light of recent experimental results

(Théorie des Interactions Fondamentales)

Sommaire:

Recently, the FNAL-E989 experiment has measured the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon with a relative precision of 0.46 ppm, thus confirming the result obtained by the BNL-E821 experiment almost twenty years ago. When combined, the two measurements disagree with the standard model prediction at the level of 4.3 standard deviations. This presentation will review and discuss past efforts and recent progress in obtaining such a high-precision standard model prediction, as well as future prospects to further improve it.
A recent high-precision determination of the fine-structure constant, at the level of 81 ppt, will also be discussed, along with its implications for the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron.
