Fuzzy soap: interfacial stabilization via CO2-generated clusters

Sommaire:

Different effects are still unexplained in physical chemistry, such as the negative charges of most natural surfaces, the Ouzo effect or the foam of seawater. Some researchers have invoked the role of some contaminants, or more recently nanobubbles, to try to rationalize them. Less studied is the role that gases, and particularly CO2, could play in soft matter. Recently, we have proposed that when CO2 supersaturates through solvent, temperature or ionic strength shifting, it spontaneously generates some ionic agregates that stick to interfaces and transiently stabilize them. This hypothesis will be discussed by showing different experimental works done in the lab or reinterpreted from the literature, involving simple systems as emulsions, bubbles and even sole water!
