Résumé: We homogenize a 2D dielectric photonic crystal by means of a multiple scale approach. We show that if the rods constituting the crystal have Mie resonances at large enough wavelengths, the crystal presents an effective permeability exhibiting anomalous dispersion. When embedding in a negative permittivity medium, this leads to a negative index material.

Résumé: A second-harmonic superprism effect in 2D photonic crystals is demonstrated numerically. A full control of the second-harmonic emission is achieved by tailoring the photonic dispersion curves. This effect is demonstrated by using a multiple scattering method generalized to the second-harmonic generation. We show that small angular variations or a wavelength tuning of the fundamental field induce large shifts of the second-harmonic emission (similar to 90 degrees). (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.

Résumé: We consider metamaterials made from a two-dimensional dielectric rod-type photonic crystal. The magneticr esponse is studied within the recently developed homogenization theory and we in particular study the effects of topology and inhomogeneous broadening. While topology itself mainly affects the Mie resonance frequency we find that the dispersion in the topological radius R of the dielectric rods may lead to significant inhomogeneous broadening and suppression of the negative-µ phenomena for δR/R0 >>ε′′/ε′, with ε=ε′ +iε′′ being the relative dielectric function of the rods.

Résumé: Using homogenization theory, we derive the effective permittivity and permeability of a wire-mesh photonic crystal from first principles. We show that this structure does not lead to a left-handed medium when it is embedded in a matrix with a negative μ, but that resonators in a medium with a negative E do form a left-handed medium in the correct range of frequencies. © 2005 Optical Society of America.

Résumé: We provide a rigorous theoretical basis for the artificial magnetic activity of metamaterials near resonances. Our approach is a renormalization-based scheme that authorizes a completely general theory. The major result is an explicit expression of the effective permeability, in terms of resonant frequencies. The theoretical results are checked numerically, and we give applications of our theory to left-handed media and to the solution of the Pokrovski-Efros paradox.

Résumé: We present a theory of the artificial magnetic activity in a two-dimensional (2D) dielectric photonic crystal. We show, by using a multiple-scale approach, that if the rods constituting the crystal have Mie resonances at large enough wavelengths, the crystal can be characterized by an effective permeability exhibiting anomalous dispersion. The theoretical results are checked numerically for periodic and random photonic crystals.
