Dynamic criticality in glass-forming liquids

Résumé: We propose that the dynamics of supercooled liquids and the formation of glasses can be understood from the existence of a zero-temperature dynamical critical point. To support our proposal, we derive a dynamic field theory for a generic kinetically constrained model, which we expect to describe the dynamics of a supercooled liquid. We study this field theory using the renormalization group (RG). Its long time behavior is dominated by a zero-temperature critical point, which for d>2 belongs to the directed percolation universality class. Molecular dynamics simulations seem to confirm the existence of dynamic scaling behavior consistent with the RG predictions.

Heterogeneous dynamics of coarsening systems.

Résumé: We show by means of experiments, theory, and simulations that the slow dynamics of coarsening systems displays dynamic heterogeneity similar to that observed in glass-forming systems. We measure dynamic heterogeneity via novel multipoint functions which quantify the emergence of dynamic, as opposed to static, correlations of fluctuations. Experiments are performed on a coarsening foam using time-resolved correlation, a recently introduced light scattering method. Theoretically we study the Ising model, and present exact results in one dimension, and numerical results in two dimensions. For all systems the same dynamic scaling of fluctuations with domain size is observed

Résumé: We discuss the slow, nonequilibrium, dynamics of spin glasses in their glassy phase. We briefly review the present theoretical understanding of the spectacular phenomena observed in experiments and describe new numerical results obtained in the first large-scale simulation of the nonequilibrium dynamics of the three-dimensional Heisenberg spin glass.
