In previous work, we used new mathematical relations between Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) invariants and rank 0 Donaldson-Thomas (DT) invariants to determine the first few terms in the generating series of Abelian D4-D2-D0 indices for a class of compact one-parameter Calabi-Yau threefolds. This allowed us to obtain striking checks of S-duality, namely the prediction that these series should be vector-valued weakly holomorphic modular forms under $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. In this work, we extend this analysis to the case of D4-D2-D0 indices with two units of D4-brane charge, where S-duality instead predicts that the corresponding generating series should be mock modular with a specific shadow. For the degree 10 hypersurface in weighted projective space $\mathbb{P}_{5,2,1,1,1}$, and the degree 8 hypersurface in $\\mathbb{P}_{4,1,1,1,1}$, where GV invariants can be computed to sufficiently high genus, we find that the first few terms indeed match a unique mock modular form with the required properties, which we determine explicitly. Turning the argument around, we obtain new boundary conditions on the holomorphic ambiguity of the topological string amplitude, which in principle allow to determine it completely up to genus 95 and 112, respectively, i.e. almost twice the maximal genus obtainable using gap and ordinary Castelnuovo vanishing conditions.

A new method is proposed to predict the topological properties of 1D periodic structures in wave physics, including quantum mechanics. From Bloch waves, a unique complex valued function is constructed, exhibiting poles and zeros. The sequence of poles and zeros of this function is a topological invariant that can be linked to the Berry–Zak phase. Since the characterization of the topological properties is done in the complex plane, it can easily be extended to the case of non‐Hermitian systems. The sequence of poles and zeros allows to predict topological phase transitions.

We study the resurgent structure of the refined topological string partition function on a non-compact Calabi-Yau threefold, at large orders in the string coupling constant $g_s$ and fixed refinement parameter $b$. For $b\neq 1$, the Borel transform admits two families of simple poles, corresponding to integral periods rescaled by $b$ and $1/b$. We show that the corresponding Stokes automorphism is expressed in terms of a generalization of the non-compact quantum dilogarithm, and we conjecture that the Stokes constants are determined by the refined DT invariants counting spin-$j$ BPS states. This jump in the refined topological string partition function is a special case (unit five-brane charge) of a more general transformation property of wave functions on quantum twisted tori introduced in earlier work by two of the authors. We show that this property follows from the transformation of a suitable refined dual partition function across BPS rays, defined by extending the Moyal star product to the realm of contact geometry.

We compute instanton corrections to the partition function of sine-Liouville (SL) theory, which provides a worldsheet description of two-dimensional string theory in a non-trivial tachyon background. We derive these corrections using a matrix model formulation based on a chiral representation of matrix quantum mechanics and using string theory methods. In both cases we restrict to the leading and subleading orders in the string coupling expansion. Then the CFT technique is used to compute two orders of the expansion in the SL perturbation parameter $\lambda$, while the matrix model gives results which are non-perturbative in $\lambda$. The matrix model results perfectly match those of string theory in the small $\lambda$ expansion. We also generalize our findings to the case of perturbation by several tachyon vertex operators carrying different momenta, and obtain interesting analytic predictions for the disk two-point and annulus one-point functions with ZZ boundary condition.

I'll show how this problem can be solved for a set of one-parameter threefolds by combining a direct integration of topological string, modular properties of rank 0 DT invariants counting D4-D2-D0 BPS states, and wall-crossing relations between rank 1 and rank 0 DT invariants. In particular, one obtains explicit (mock) modular functions encoding infinite sets of D4-D2-D0 BPS indices and new boundary conditions for the holomorphic anomaly equation allowing to overcome the limitations of the direct integration method.

In this article, we conduct comparative studies on the optical properties of metallic carbon nanotubes. First, we compare the complex dielectric constant predicted by an analytical model, the linear surface conductivity model, with ab initio calculations based on density functional theory. We highlight the similarities and differences between these two models, with the major discrepancy being the significantly different behavior of the plasma frequency with respect to the carbon nanotube diameter. In the second step, we compare the predictions of these models with experimental measurements of the dielectric function. We demonstrate that the screened plasma frequency serves as a reliable quantifier for distinguishing between the two models. In conclusion, we find that the ab initio calculations more accurately describe the optical properties of metallic carbon nanotubes compared with the commonly used linear surface conductivity model.
