Résumé:

The screened Coulomb potential plays a crucial role in the binding energies of excitons in a thin dielectric slab. The asymptotic behavior of this potential is studied when the thickness of the slab is very small as compared to the exciton Bohr radius. A regularized expression is given and the exact effective 2D potential is derived. These expressions may be useful for the computation of the exciton binding energy in 2D or quasi‐2D materials.

We perform stringent tests of thermodynamic theories of the glass transition over the experimentally relevant temperature regime for several simulated glass-formers. The swap Monte Carlo algorithm is used to estimate the configurational entropy and static point-to-set lengthscale, and careful extrapolations are used for the relaxation times. We first quantify the relation between configurational entropy and the point-to-set lengthscale in two and three dimensions. We then show that the Adam-Gibbs relation is generally violated in simulated models for the experimentally relevant time window. Collecting experimental data for several supercooled molecular liquids, we show that the same trends are observed experimentally. Deviations from the Adam-Gibbs relation remain compatible with random first order transition theory, and may account for the reported discrepancies between Kauzmann and Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann temperatures. Alternatively, they may also indicate that even near $T_g$ thermodynamics is not the only driving force for slow dynamics.

Control of the crystalline orientation of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defects in diamond is here demonstrated by tuning the temperature of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth on a (113)-oriented diamond substrate. We show that preferential alignment of NV defects along the [111] axis is improved when the CVD growth temperature is decreased, leading to $79\%$ preferential orientation at 800°C, as compared to only 47.5% at 1000°C. This effect is then combined with temperature-dependent incorporation of NV defects during the CVD growth to obtain preferential alignment over dense ensembles of NV defects spatially localized in thin diamond layers. These results demonstrate that growth temperature can be exploited as an additional degree of freedom to engineer optimized diamond samples for quantum sensing applications.

Today, in the presence of global warming, understanding how plants respond to drought stress is essential to meet the challenge of developing new cultivars and new irrigation strategies, consistent with the maintenance of crop productivity. In this context, the study of the relation between plants and water is of central interest for modeling their responses to biotic and abiotic constraints. Paradoxically, there are very few direct and noninvasive methods to quantify and measure the level and the flow of water in plants. The present work aims to develop a noninvasive methodology for living plant based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) at low magnetic field and imaging (MRI) to tackle the issue of water quantity in plants. For this purpose, a portable NMR device measuring the signal level at 8 mT was built. This instrument addresses specific challenges such as miniaturization, accessibility, and overheating in order to maintain the plant intact of time over long period. Time dependence of the water content in sorghum plants is reported under abiotic stress as well as the fraction of transpirable soil water and the photosynthesis activity through the leaves. At high magnetic field (9.4 T), T2 maps were acquired on the same sorghum plants at two time points. The combination of these approaches allows us to identify ecophysiological biomarkers of drought stress. One particular interesting result concerns the spatial distribution of water in two anatomically contrasted sorghum genotypes.

L'objectif général de cette thèse était d'exalter l'émission dans le proche infrarouge en utilisant des antennes plasmoniques. Les antennes plasmoniques permettent de modifier la dynamique de désexcitation ainsi que le diagramme d'émission d'un émetteur; ces deux aspects permettent donc d'améliorer/exalter la photoluminescence par rapport à un émetteur non couplé à une antenne. Au cours de cette thèse, deux émetteurs ont été étudiés : les nanotubes de carbone et les centres G dans le silicium.Les antennes plasmoniques sont, par exemple, des nanoparticules métalliques. Ainsi, dans un premier temps, nous avons étudié les propriétés de diffusion de nanoparticules métalliques. Ceci a permis de développer une technique permettant de déposer des nanoparticules uniques sur un substrat. La caractérisation optique de diverses nanoparticules déposées sur divers substrats fut réalisée par des mesures de spectres de diffusion. Des études en polarisation sur le signal excitateur ainsi que sur le signal diffusé ont permis de sonder l'origine des résonances plasmoniques apparaissant dans les spectres de diffusion. Les influences de la température et du substrat sur les spectres de diffusion ont aussi été étudiées.Dans une deuxième partie, nous nous sommes intéressés à un premier émetteur dans le proche infrarouge : les nanotubes de carbone semi-conducteurs. Nous avons caractérisé la photoluminescence d'un ensemble de nanotubes puis d'uniques nanotubes. La photoluminescence d'un nanotube de carbone unique est caractérisée par un faiblement rendement radiatif (de l'ordre du %) ce qui implique que, dans notre montage expérimental, l'émission par un unique nanotube est à la limite de détectabilité. Afin d’obtenir des applications optiques viables à base de nanotubes de carbone, nous avons essayé d'exalter leur photoluminescence grâce à des antennes plasmoniques. Nous avons donc déposé des nanoparticules métalliques au-dessus d’une couche de nanotubes de carbone. Nous avons observé ponctuellement l'exaltation de la photoluminescence, mais cette exaltation cessait sur des durées de l'ordre de la minute.Enfin, nous avons étudié un deuxième émetteur dans le proche infrarouge : les centres G dans le silicium. La caractérisation optique d'un ensemble de centre G a été réalisé. Le spectre d'émission a été mesuré et analysé quantitativement. Le temps de vie du centre G a aussi été mesuré pour la première fois. Ces deux types d'études (spectrales et temporelles) ont aussi été réalisées à diverses températures afin de sonder la dynamique de désexcitation des centres G. La saturation d'un ensemble de centres G a aussi été étudiée quantitativement. Enfin, nous avons réalisé des mesures laissant penser que le régime du centre G unique est presque atteint. L'exaltation de l'émission des centres G par des antennes plasmoniques n'a pas pu être étudiée par manque de temps.

The Raman modes of α-quartz-type boron phosphate were found to be extremely stable in frequency over a large temperature range from 300–1000 K. In order to determine the origin of this behavior, the material was also studied at high pressure up to 6 GPa. Upon compression, a classical behavior was observed with mode Grüneisen parameters ranging from −0.08(2) to 3.0(1). The present results indicate that the high temperature behavior in this material is an example of an unusual compensation effect between phonon–phonon interactions and implicit contributions due to thermal expansion. Phonon stability is of utmost importance for materials properties that are dependent on it such as dielectric and piezoelectric properties, for example. Boron phosphate belongs to the important class of α-quartz-type piezoelectric materials for which temperature stability is of primordial importance for resonator and sensor applications.
