Optically active spin defects hosted in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) are promising candidates for the development of a two-dimensional (2D) quantum sensing unit. Here, we demonstrate quantitative magnetic imaging with h-BN flakes doped with negatively charged boron-vacancy (VB-) centers throughneutron irradiation. As a proof-of-concept, we image the magnetic field produced by CrTe2 , a van der Waals ferromagnet with a Curie temperature slightly above 300 K. Compared to other quantum sensors embedded in 3D materials, the advantages of the h-BN-based magnetic sensor described in this work areits ease of use, high flexibility, and, more importantly, its ability to be placed in close proximity to a target sample. Such a sensing unit will likely find numerous applications in 2D materials research by offering a simple way to probe the physics of van der Waals heterostructures.

3D halide perovskites used in light emitters and PV systems exhibit an unusual anharmonicity, which is not accounted for in nowadays descriptions of phonons and electron-phonon coupling. Therefore, the low frequency lattice vibrations and relaxations were investigated in single crystals of the four 3D hybrid organolead perovskites, MAPbBr3, FAPbBr3, MAPbI3, and FAPbI3, at the Brillouin zone center using Raman and Brillouin scattering and at the zone boundary using inelastic neutron scattering. The temperature dependence of the PbX6 lattice modes in the four compounds can berenormalized into universal curves and no soft vibration is observed excluding a displacive-like transitional dynamics related to structural phase transitions. The reorientational (pseudospin) motions of the molecular cations exhibit a seemingly order-disorder character recalling that of plastic crystals, but attributed to a secondary order-parameter. At ultra-low frequency, a quasi-elastic component evidenced by Brillouin scattering and associated to the unresolved central peak observed in neutron scattering, is attributed to center of mass anharmonic motions and rattling of the molecular cations in the perovskite cavities. 3D halide perovskites are therefore in a very unusualsituation where anharmonicity prevails. It is leading to partial, extensive and ultraslow critical and stochatic dynamics connected to structural instabilities. The extensive disorder of the lattice at normal operation temperatures for devices is similar to premelting where only long-range acoustic normal modes survive.

Polarized fluorescence emission of nanoscale emitters has been extensively studied for applications such as bioimaging, display, and optical communication. Extending the polarization properties in large assemblies of compact emitters is, however, challenging because of self-aggregation processes, which can induce depolarization effects, quenching, and cancellations of molecular dipoles. Here we use a-sexithiophene (6T) molecules confined inside boron nitride nanotubes (6T@BNNTs) to induce fluorescence anisotropy in a transparent host. The experiments first indicate that individual 6T@BNNTs exhibit a high polarization extinction ratio, up to 700, at room temperature. Using aberration- corrected HRTEM, we show that the fluorescence anisotropy is consistent with a general alignment of encapsulated 6T molecules along the nanotube axis. The molecular alignment is weakly influenced by the nanotube diameter, a phenomenon ascribed to stronger molecule-to-sidewall interactions compared to intermolecular interactions. By stretching a flexible thin film made of transparent polymers mixed with 6T@BNNTs, we induce a macroscopic fluorescence anisotropy within the film. This work demonstrates that the dyes@BNNT system can be used as an easy-to-handle platform to induce fluorescence anisotropy in photonic materials.

Lattice dynamics in 3D lead halide hybrid perovskites is analyzed together with the possible consequences for device applications

Graphene is a quantum spin Hall insulator with a 45 µeV wide non-trivial topological gap induced by the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. Even though this zero-field spin splitting is weak, it makes graphene an attractive candidate for applications in quantum technologies, given the resulting long spin relaxation time. On the other side, the staggered sub-lattice potential, resulting from the coupling of graphene with its boron nitride substrate, compensates intrinsic spin-orbit coupling and decreases the non-trivial topological gap, which may lead to the phase transition into trivial band insulator state. In this work, we present extensive experimental studies of the zero-field splittings in monolayer and bilayer graphene in a temperature range 2K-12K by means of sub-Terahertz photoconductivity-based electron spin resonance technique. Surprisingly, we observe a decrease of the spin splittings with increasing temperature. We discuss the origin of this phenomenon by considering possible physical mechanisms likely to induce a temperature dependence of the spin-orbit coupling. These include the difference in the expansion coefficients between the graphene and the boron nitride substrate or the metal contacts, the electron-phonon interactions, and the presence of a magnetic order at low temperature. Our experimental observation expands knowledge about the non-trivial topological gap in graphene.

We combine the swap Monte Carlo algorithm to long multi-CPU molecular dynamics simulations to analyse the equilibrium relaxation dynamics of model supercooled liquids over a time window covering ten orders of magnitude for temperatures down to the experimental glass transition temperature $T_g$. The analysis of \rev{several} time correlation functions coupled to spatio-temporal resolution of particle motion allow us to elucidate the nature of the equilibrium dynamics in deeply supercooled liquids. We find that structural relaxation starts at early times in rare localised regions characterised by a waiting time distribution that develops a power law near $T_g$. At longer times, relaxation events accumulate with increasing probability in these regions as $T_g$ is approached. This accumulation leads to a power-law growth of the linear extension of relaxed domains with time with a large, temperature-dependent dynamic exponent. Past the average relaxation time, unrelaxed domains slowly shrink with time due to relaxation events happening at their boundaries. Our results provide a complete microscopic description of the particle motion responsible for key experimental signatures of glassy dynamics, from the shape and temperature evolution of relaxation spectra to the core features of dynamic heterogeneity. They also provide a microscopic basis to understand the emergence of dynamic facilitation in deeply supercooled liquids and allow us to critically reassess theoretical descriptions of the glass transition.
