This paper presents an efficient way to measure the curing kinetics and gel point, αgel, in epoxy resins from one single experiment. The epoxy curing reaction is herein monitored using in situ and time-resolved near-infrared absorption spectroscopy (NIR). The curing profiles over different isothermal conditions are in good agreement with DSC. Furthermore, the increase of the NIR absorption bands of aromatic rings (unreactive throughout curing) probe the cure shrinkage, as more and more aromatic rings are localized within the fixed sample volume. Therefore, the gel point is determined using the onset of the aromatic absorption increase. The results are in good agreement with the theoretical gel point, as well as DMA results. This innovative approach enables gelation measurements on epoxy neat resins and film composites with an easy-to-perform, accurate, robust, and versatile method.

The increase of plastics and microplastics in the environment is a major environmental challenge. Still, little is known about the degradation kinetics of macroplastics into smaller particles, under the joint actions of micro-organisms and physico-chemical factors, like UV or mechanical constraints. In order to gain insight into (bio)-degradation in various media, we perform accelerated erosion experiments by using a well-known enzymatic system. We show that the microstructure of semi-crystalline polymers plays a crucial role in the pattern formation at their surface. For the first time, the release of fragments of micrometric size is evidenced, through a mechanism that does not involve fracture propagation. A geometric erosion model allows a quantitative understanding of erosion rates and surface patterns, and provides a critical heterogeneity size, parting two types of behavior: spherulites either released, or eroded in situ. This new geometric approach could constitute a useful tool to predict the erosion kinetics and micro-particle generation in various media.

Polymerized ionic liquids (PolyILs) are promising materials for applications in electrochemical devices spanning from fuel cells to capacitors and batteries. In principle, PolyILs have a competitive advantage over traditional electrolytes in being single ion conductors and thus enabling a transference number close to unity. Despite this perceived advantage, surprisingly low room temperature ionic conductivities measured in the lab raise an important fundamental question: how does the molecular structure mediate conductivity? In this work, wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), vibrational sum frequency generation (vSFG), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to study the bulk and interfacial structure of PolyILs, while broad band dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) was used to probe corresponding dynamics and conductive properties for a series of the PolyIL samples with tunable chemistries and structures. Our results reveal that the size of the mobile anions has a tremendous impact on chain packing in PolyILs that wasn’t addressed previously. Larger mobile ions tend to create a well-packed structure, while smaller ions frustrate chain packing. The magnitude of these changes and level of structural heterogeneity are shown to depend on the chemical functionality and flexibility of studied PolyILs. Furthermore, these experimental and computational results provide new insight into the correlation between conductivity and structure in PolyILs, suggesting that structural heterogeneity helps to reduce the activation energy for ionic conductivity in the glassy state.

We report on the extensional dynamics of spinning drops in miscible and immiscible background fluids following a rotational speed jump. Two radically different behaviors are observed. Drops in immiscible environments relax exponentially to their equilibrium shape, with a relaxation time that does not depend on the centrifugal force. We find an excellent quantitative agreement with the relaxation time predicted for quasi-spherical drops by Stone and Bush (Q. Appl. Math.1996, 54, 551), while other models proposed in the literature fail to capture our data. By contrast, drops immersed in a miscible background fluid do not relax to a steady shape: they elongate indefinitely, their length following a power-law in very good agreement with the dynamics predicted by Lister and Stone (J. Fluid Mech.1996, 317, 275) for inviscid drops. Our results strongly suggest that low compositional gradients in miscible fluids do not give rise to an effective interfacial tension measurable by spinning drop tensiometry.

We report on the linear viscoelastic properties of mixtures comprising multiarm star (as model soft colloids) and long linear chain homopolymers in a good solvent. In contrast to earlier works, we investigated symmetric mixtures (with a size ratio of 1) and showed that the polymeric and colloidal responses can be decoupled. The adopted experimental protocol involved probing the linear chain dynamics in different star environments. To this end, we studied mixtures with different star mass fractions, which were kept constant, while linear chains were added and their entanglement plateau modulus (Gp) and terminal relaxation time (τd) were measured as a function of their concentration. Two distinct scaling regimes were observed for both Gp and τd: at low linear polymer concentrations, a weak concentration dependence was observed, which became even weaker as the fraction of stars in the mixtures increased into the star glassy regime. On the other hand, at higher linear polymer concentrations, the classical entangled polymer scaling was recovered. Simple scaling arguments show that the threshold crossover concentration between the two regimes corresponds to the maximum osmotic star compression and signals the transition from confined to bulk dynamics. These results provide the needed ingredients to complete the state diagram of soft colloid–polymer mixtures and investigate their dynamics at large polymer–colloid size ratios. They also offer an alternative way to explore aspects of the colloidal glass transition and the polymer dynamics in confinement. Finally, they provide a new avenue to tailor the rheology of colloid-polymer mixtures.

We investigate by time-resolved synchrotron ultra-small X-ray scattering the dynamics of liquid–liquid phase-separation (LLPS) of gluten protein suspensions following a temperature quench. Samples at a fixed concentration (237 mg ml$^{−1}$) but with different protein compositions are investigated. In our experimental conditions, we show that fluid viscoelastic samples depleted in polymeric glutenin phase-separate following a spinodal decomposition process. We quantitatively probe the late stage coarsening that results from a competition between thermodynamics that speeds up the coarsening rate as the quench depth increases and transport that slows down the rate. For even deeper quenches, the even higher viscoelasticity of the continuous phase leads to a “quasi” arrested phase separation. Anomalous phase-separation dynamics is by contrast measured for a gel sample rich in glutenin, due to elastic constraints. This work illustrates the role of viscoelasticity in the dynamics of LLPS in protein dispersions.

We show that compressive sensing (CS) calculations are very ecient to reconstruct in 3D sparse objects whose 2D hologram has been recorded by digital holographic microscopy. The method is well adapted to image small scattering objects moving within a larger motionless object. This situation corresponds to red blood cells (RBCs) circulating in the vascular system of a zebrash (Danio rerio) larva. RBCs positions are imaged in 3D from a single hologram, while the RBCs trajectories, i.e. the perfused blood vessels, are imaged from a sequence of holograms. With respect to previous work (Donnarumma et al., Opt. express, 24, 26887, 2016), we get a gain of ∼ 500 in calculation speed.
