We present a scalable solution-processing method for fabricating high-quality graphene and graphene/1T-MoS2 heterostructure films. The process begins with the synthesis of potassiumintercalated graphite (KC8), which is exfoliated in tetrahydrofuran (THF) to produce stable dispersions of negatively charged (electron rich) graphene sheets. The graphene is subsequently transferred to water, forming a surfactant-free aqueous dispersion suitable for creating homogenous graphene films via vacuum filtration and stamping. Additionally, graphene is combined with 1T-MoS2 nanosheets to fabricate graphene/1T-MoS2 bulk heterostructure films. Comprehensive characterization, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), absorption spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photon emission spectroscopy (XPS), reveals that the heterostructure films exhibit enhanced optical and electronic properties, including improved light absorption, which could lead to novel photo-responsive devices. Raman spectroscopy shows significant changes in the graphene's structural and electronic properties upon interaction with MoS2, indicating strong interlayer coupling and potential charge transfer between the layered components. The graphene films demonstrate highly sensitive detection of dopamine (DA), while the graphene/1T-MoS2 bulk heterostructure films exhibit capacitance values up to 38.3

Fg -1 at 5 mV s -1 in non-aqueous electrolytes. These results highlight the potential of these films for advanced applications in molecular sensing and energy storage.

Reducing human reliance on high-electricity-consuming cooling technologies like air conditioning is crucial for reshaping the global energy paradigm. Through utilizing natural starch gelatinization, freeze-drying and densification processes, we fabricated an ultrawhite cooling starch film with an ultrahigh solar reflectance of 0.96 and strong infrared emittance of 0.94. The porous structure of the cooling starch film, systematically controlled by the mechanical pressing processing, allows for effective scattering of solar radiation while emitting strongly during the atmospheric transparency window, thereby contributing to high-efficiency daytime radiative cooling capacity. Furthermore, the cooling starch film exhibits excellent mechanical tensile strength, measuring at up to 38.5 megapascals, which is more than twice the strength of natural wood. The ultrawhite radiative cooling starch film holds significant promise for optimizing cooling energy usage, especially in hot and arid climates.

Phase-change materials (PCMs) play a pivotal role in the development of advanced thermal devices due to their reversible phase transitions, which drastically modify their thermal and optical properties. In this study, we present an effective dynamic thermal transistor with an asymmetric design that employs distinct PCMs, vanadium dioxide (VO2), and germanium antimony telluride (GST), on either side of the gate terminal, which is the center of the control unit of the near-field thermal transistor. This asymmetry introduces unique thermal modulation capabilities, taking control of thermal radiation in the near-field regime. VO2 transitions from an insulating to a metallic state, while GST undergoes a reversible switch between amorphous and crystalline phases, each inducing substantial changes in thermal transport properties. By strategically combining these materials, the transistor exhibits enhanced functionality, dynamically switching between states of absorbing and releasing heat by tuning the temperature of gate. This gate terminal not only enables active and efficient thermal management but also provides effective opportunities for manipulating heat flow in radiative thermal circuits. Our findings highlight the potential of such asymmetrically structured thermal transistors in advancing applications across microelectronics, high-speed data processing, and sustainable energy systems, where precise and responsive thermal control is critical for performance and efficiency.

In September 2023, the Biology and Physics of Prokaryotic Chromosomes meeting ran at the Lorentz Center in Leiden, The Netherlands. As part of the workshop, those in attendance developed a series of discussion points centered around current challenges for the field, how these might be addressed, and how the field is likely to develop over the next 10 years. The Lorentz Center staff facilitated these discussions via tools aimed at optimizing productive interactions. This Perspective article is a summary of these discussions and reflects the state‐of‐the‐art of the field. It is expected to be of help to colleagues in advancing their own research related to prokaryotic chromosomes and inspiring novel interdisciplinary collaborations. This forward‐looking perspective highlights the open questions driving current research and builds on the impressive recent progress in these areas as represented by the accompanying reviews, perspectives, and research articles in this issue. These articles underline the multi‐disciplinary nature of the field, the multiple length scales at which chromatin is studied in vitro and in and highlight the differences and similarities of bacterial and archaeal chromatin and chromatin‐associated processes.

Cytoskeletal-mediated membrane compartmentalization is essential to support cellular functions, from signaling to cell division, migration, or phagocytosis. Septins are cytoskeletal proteins that directly interact with membranes, acting as scaffolds to recruit proteins to cellular locations and as structural diffusion barriers. How septins interact with and remodel the lipid organization of membranes is unclear. Here, we combined minimal reconstituted systems and yeast cell imaging to study septin-mediated membrane organization. Our results show that at low concentrations membrane-diffusive septins self-assemble into sub-micrometric patches that co-exist with the septin collar at the division site. We found that patches are made of short septin filaments and that are able to modulate the lipid organization of membranes. Furthermore, we show that the polybasic domain of Cdc11 influences the membrane-organizing and curvature-sensing properties of septins. Collectively, our work provides understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which septins can support cellular functions intimately linked to membranes.

Hydrogen is considered a promising alternative to conventional fossil fuels, as it can be easily produced from renewable energy sources. While electrocatalytic water splitting can achieve near-unity faradaic efficiency in producing hydrogen from water, the widespread implementation of large-scale water electrolysis is hindered by reliance on costly platinum group metal-based electrocatalysts. Here, we report on the rational design of Molybdenum-containing SiCN composites (Mo–SiCN) through an active-filler controlled pyrolysis (AFCOP) strategy. Our investigation into the composite's microstructural evolution revealed the formation of a Mo4.8Si3C0.6 Nowotny phase at a relatively low temperature of 1000 °C. After optimization, the resulting catalyst demonstrated a Tafel slope below 95 mV dec−1 and an overpotential near 575 mV at a normalized current density of 1 mA μF−1. As a proof of concept, the AFCOP strategy was employed to engineer a crack-free Mo–SiCN micropattern, enabling the miniaturization of a Pt-free electrochemical water splitting (EWS) reactor. Produced via soft lithography, the Mo–SiCN pattern exhibits feature sizes ranging from 10 to 200 μm, with near-net-shape replication and a Young's modulus of ≈60 GPa.
