Résumé: La foudre est un phénomène spectaculaire et très bien connu par l'ensemble de l'humanité depuis des millions d'années. Pourtant, notre compréhension de la physique de la foudre est bien inférieure à celle des noyaux atomiques, qui sont invisibles et qui n'ont été découverts qu'il y a cent ans. Tandis que pour les noyaux on sait calculer toutes (ou presque) leurs propriétés, ce n'est pas du tout le cas pour la foudre. Par exemple, on n'a aucune idée de la raison pour laquelle le diamètre du canal de la foudre est de quelques centimètres, plutôt que 1m ou 1mm. Je vais décrire brièvement l'état de nos connaissances actuelles en matière d'électricité atmosphérique et de propriétés de la foudre, qui ont été établies grâce à des observations et des techniques expérimentales très avancées. Je vais aussi expliquer les nombreux mystères de la foudre et l'énorme travail qui reste à accomplir pour les percer à jour.
Commentaires: Michel Dyakonov a reçu en 2009 deux prix très importants pour l'ensemble de ses travaux exceptionnels : le Prix Félix Robin de la SFP ainsi que le Beller Lectureship award par l'American Physical Society. Le nom de Michel Dyakonov est attaché à plusieurs phénomènes physiques : le mécanisme Dyakonov-Perel de relaxation des spins dans les semiconducteurs, l'instabilité Dyakonov-Shur du courant dans les nano-transistors, les ondes électromagnetiques de surface de Dyakonov (" Dyakonov surface waves ").

Résumé: This is an overview of the main physical ideas for application of field effect transistors for generation and detection of Terahertz radiation. Resonant frequencies of the two-dimensional plasma oscillations in FETs increase with the reduction of the channel dimensions and reach the THz range for sub-micron gate lengths. When the mobility is high enough, the dynamics of a short channel FET at THz frequencies is dominated by plasma waves. This may result, on the one hand, in a spontaneous generation of plasma waves by a dc current and on the other hand, in a resonant response to the incoming radiation. In the opposite case, when plasma oscillations are overdamped, the FET can operate as an efficient broadband THz detector.

Résumé: Detection of THz radiation by a Field Effect Transistor InGaAs/InAlAs transistor was investigated at 4.2 K as a function of the magnetic field and gate voltage. We observed oscillations of the photovoltaic signal analogous to Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, as well as their strong enhancement at the cyclotron resonance conditions. The results are successfully quantitatively described within the frame of a recent theory, taking into account a new source of nonlinearity related to Shubnikov-de Haas effect. We show that the detection is due to gated plasmon.
