We report a combined experimental and theoretical lattice dynamics study of the Ruddlesden–Popper layered compound Sr₂TiO₄. From inelastic neutron scattering experiments, we derive the generalized phonon density of states of Sr₂TiO₄. We also report its heat capacity, thermal expansion, and thermodynamic Grüneisen parameters using the calculated bulk modulus and find a large value of about 2. Using Raman scattering experiments under pressure, we discuss a potential structural distortion of the tetragonal structure above 11 GPa, which could be due to nonhydrostatic compression. The mode Grüneisen parameters of the four Raman-active modes are determined and shown to be in reasonable agreement with those obtained by density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) calculations. The temperature behavior of the Raman-active modes was studied, allowing us to determine the implicit volume and explicit anharmonic contributions. Above 400 K, the implicit volume contribution dominates the temperature-induced variation of the four Raman-active modes, whereas, below this temperature, the explicit anharmonic contribution is the dominant contributor to the highest energy mode. Our results underline the importance of anharmonicity in vibration-related properties of Sr₂TiO₄.

The components of the frequency-dependent complex refractive index were determined indirectly for the new non-centrosymmetric α-GeO2 crystal using polarized Fourier transform infrared reflectivity spectra measured in the far- and mid-infrared spectral region at room temperature. All the longitudinal- and transverse-optical infrared active modes with E and A2 symmetry, according to the D3 point group, were identified and localized within the 100-1000 cm-1 range in very good agreement with a previous first-principles based calculation. For the A2- and E-type modes, both the longitudinal- and transverse-optical splitting were detected. The refractive indices no ( E⊥c) and ne (E //c) in the infrared domain present considerably higher values than the ones observed in the visible light range, and the high birefringence would find application in many optical devices.

The negative thermal expansion material potassium cadmium dicyanoargentate, KCd[Ag(CN) 2 ] 3 , is studied at high pressure using a combination of X-ray single-crystal diffraction, X-ray powder diffraction, infrared and Raman spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. In common with the isostructural manganese analogue, KMn[Ag(CN) 2 ] 3 , this material is shown to exhibit very strong negative linear compressibility (NLC) in the crystallographic c direction due to structure hinging. We find increased structural flexibility results in enhanced NLC and NTE properties, but this also leads to two pressure-induced phase transitionsto very large unit cells involving octahedral tilting and shearing of the structurebelow 2 GPa. The presence of potassium cations has an important effect on the mechanical and thermodynamic properties of this family, while the chemical versatility demonstrated here is of considerable interest to tune unusual mechanical properties for application. ■ INTRODUCTION Materials where external stimuli induces an anomalous response, such as expansion upon cooling (negative thermal expansion, NTE 1−3) or on application of hydrostatic pressure (negative linear compressibility, NLC 4,5), have recently received considerable attention. These materials that "break the rules"as a result of specific, and therefore rare, elastic anomalies 6−8 are curious from a fundamental point of view but might also be revolutionary for a range of technologies including interferometric pressure sensors, pressure-controlled or pressure-sensitive electronic devices, and smart actua-tion. 2,4,9−11 The ability to design materials with unusual properties is therefore a key focus of the field: can we understand these elastic anomalies so that we can tune the magnitude and/or range of negative responses? Negative thermal expansion may occur in one, two, or all principal directions without violating thermodynamics. 12,13 Thus, for example, the volume coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), () V V V T p 1 α = ∂ ∂ , takes large negative values in zirconium tungstate ZrW 2 O 8 and zinc(II) cyanide Zn(CN) 2 over large temperature ranges. 14 Under hydrostatic pressure, however, volume must always reduce and so the volume compressibility (() K V V V p T 1 = − ∂ ∂ , conventionally formulated as the bulk modulus, B = (K V) −1), must be definite and positive. 15 Expansion under pressure can occur in one or two directions, as long as this is coupled to volume reduction. 5,12,16 Therefore, negative linear compressibility (NLC)the expansion in one principal direction of a material under hydrostatic pressureis conceptually and empirically related to linear-NTE. In both cases, anomalous response relies on mechanical anisotropy. The so-called "wine-rack" model is often invoked where mechanical hinging allows linear expansion coupled to volume reduction on increasing pressure or decreasing temperature. 5,8 Attention in this field has focused on a class of materials known as coordination polymers (CPs), in particular due to the very large magnitude of responses found in comparison to conventional oxide-based materials. 7 Examples that show large NTE and NLC include cyanide frameworks such as Ag 3 [Co-(CN) 6 ] (refs 17 and 18), KMn[Ag(CN) 2 ] 3 (refs 19 and 20), Zn[Au(CN) 2 ] 2 (refs 21 and 22), and metal−organic frameworks 23 (MOFs) such as MIL-53 (ref 24), UTSA-16 (ref 25), ZAG-4 (ref 26), and [NH 4 ][Zn(HCOO) 3 ] (ref 27). In many cases, mechanical response can be predicted in these systems by considering the framework as a set of rigid connectors and hinges, sodepending on geometry and topologyNTE or

The variety of H bond (HB) interactions is a source of inspiration for bottom-up molecular engineering through self-aggregation. Non-conventional intermolecular HBs between N,N0disubstituted urea and thiourea are studied in detail by vibrational spectroscopies and ab initio calculations. Raman and IR mode assignments are given. We show that it is possible to study selectively the different intermolecular bifurcated intra-and inter-dimer HBs with the two types of HB acceptors. Through the ab initio calculation, the thioamide I mode, a specific marker of N-H … S=C HB interactions, is unambiguously identified.

Au-covered hollow urchin-like ZnO nanostructures were prepared with controlled size by combining nanosphere lithography (NSL), atomic layer deposition (ALD), electrodeposition, and electron beam (e-beam) evaporation. The optimal Au film thickness for sensing applications was determined by measuring the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) intensities of the substrates. Furthermore, the sensing performances of these hybrid nanostructures have been investigated by using chemical and biological molecules: thiophenol and adenine, respectively. Limits of detection (LOD) of 10 À8 M and 10 À6 M were found for the detection of thiophenol and adenine, respectively. Additionally, the excellent uniformity and batch-to-batch reproducibility of the substrates make them excellent candidates for reliable SERS sensing and biosensing.

The BiCuSeO-based compounds with very low thermal conductivity are among the most promising thermoelectric materials recently discovered. Their lattice dynamics, which remains mostly unexplored experimentally, is investigated in this paper. We report Raman experiments on BiCuSe1–xSxO solid solutions and infrared experiments on BiCuSeO and BiCuSO alloys coupled to first-principles-based calculations. We have observed that the high-energy A1g Raman-active mode strongly depends on the chalcogen content. We also report the density functional theory calculations of the dielectric and elastic constants, the phonons in the whole Brillouin zone, and the thermodynamic properties. We have determined the thermal expansion of BiCuSeO at room temperature from neutron diffraction experiments and evaluated its thermodynamic Grüneisen parameter and found a quite large value compared to other thermoelectric materials, which confirms the large anharmonicity of BiCuSeO.

The aim of the present work is to study by means of thermodynamic measurements, i.e. isotherms of adsorption and desorption of water and Infrared (IR) spectroscopy, the effect of the interlayer cations on the mechanism of adsorption-desorption of water in the case of a montmorillonite exchanged with alkaline-earth metals. For the first time, the net isosteric heat of water adsorption and desorption is determined from isotherms recorded at three temperatures. The net isosteric heat is a very useful parameter for getting more insights into the sorption mechanism since it provides information about the sorption energy evolution which can be complementary to that obtained from structural or gravimetric measurements. The homoionic montmorillonite samples are prepared from purification and cationic exchanged in aqueous solution of the raw material, i.e the reference SWy-2 Wyoming material. XRD at the dry state and elemental chemical analysis confirm that the treatment does not deteriorate the clay structure and yield the expected homoionic composition. The adsorption and desorption isotherms measured at various temperatures show that the nature of the interlayer, i.e. exchangeable, cation changes the adsorbed/desorbed amount of water molecules for a given water relative pressure. The total amount of water adsorbed at = 0.5 follows the cation sequence Ca>Mg>Ba. Although the adsorption isosteric heat also follows the cation sequence Ca>Mg>Ba, that of desorption obeys a slightly different sequence Ca~Mg>Ba. This discrepancy between the adsorption and desorption heat is due to the higher irreversibility of water sorption process in the Ca exchanged montmorillonite. Finally, analysis of the IR spectra recorded at room temperature and under a primary vacuum reveals that the amount of adsorbed water follows the same sequence as that of the isosteric heat of adsorption and shows the coexistence of liquid-like and solid-like water confined in the interlayer space.
