Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), a major cause of mortality and disability, is a complex disease with heterogeneous and ill-understood biological mechanisms. Human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) are a promising tool to model human disease, including the impact of genetic susceptibility. Methods: We developed a simple and reliable method for reprogramming peripheral blood mononuclear cells into hiPSCs and to differentiate them into air–liquid interface bronchial epithelium within 45 days. Importantly, this method does not involve any cell sorting step. We reprogrammed blood cells from one healthy control and three patients with very severe COPD. Results: The mean cell purity at the definitive endoderm and ventral anterior foregut endoderm (vAFE) stages was >80%, assessed by quantifying C-X-C Motif Chemokine Receptor 4/SRY-Box Transcription Factor 17 (CXCR4/SOX17) and NK2 Homeobox 1 (NKX2.1) expression, respectively. vAFE cells from all four hiPSC lines differentiated into bronchial epithelium in air–liquid interface conditions, with large zones covered by beating ciliated, basal, goblets, club cells and neuroendocrine cells, as found in vivo. The hiPSC-derived airway epithelium (iALI) from patients with very severe COPD and from the healthy control were undistinguishable. Conclusions: iALI bronchial epithelium is ready for better understanding lung disease pathogenesis and accelerating drug discovery.

A radiative thermostat system senses its own temperature and automatically modulates heat transfer by turning on/off the cooling to maintain its temperature near a desired set point. Taking advantage of far- and near-field radiative thermal technologies, we propose an intelligent radiative thermostat induced by the combination of passive radiative cooling and near-field radiative thermal diode for thermal regulation at room temperature. The top passive radiative cooler in thermostat system with static thermal emissivity uses the cold outer space to passively cool itself all day, which can provide the bottom structure with the sub-ambient cold source. Meanwhile, using the phase-transition material vanadium dioxide, the bottom structure forms a near-field radiative thermal diode with the top cooler, which can significantly regulate the heat transfer between two terminals of the diode and then realize a stable temperature of the bottom structure. Besides, the backsided heat input of the thermostat has been taken into account according to real-world applications. Thermal performance of the proposed radiative thermostat design has been analyzed, showing that the coupling effect of static passive radiative cooling and dynamic internal heat transfer modulation can maintain an equilibrium temperature approximately locked within the phase transition region. Besides, after considering empirical indoor-to-outdoor heat flux, rendering its thermal performance closer to that of passive solar residential building walls, the calculation result proves that the radiative thermostat system can effectively modulate the temperature and stabilize it within a controllable range. Passive radiative thermostats driven by near-field radiative thermal diode can potentially enable intelligent temperature regulation technologies, for example, to moderate diurnal temperature in regions with extreme thermal swings.

We study the deep-ultraviolet emission in Bernal boron nitride as a function of temperature. The quasidegeneracy of indirect and direct excitons in Bernal boron nitride leads to their simultaneous recombination, allowing a comparison of phonon-assisted broadening in the two cases. Temperature-dependent measurements reveal that below 200 K, the efficiency of phonon-assisted broadening is one order of magnitude lower for the direct transition at 6.035 eV than for the phonon replicas of the indirect exciton. This striking effect results from the inhibition of quasielastic acoustic phonon scattering in the strong-coupling regime of the light-matter interaction, where the density of final states is reduced by the curvature of the polaritonic dispersion.

We report a complete investigation of the structural, electronic, vibrational, elastic and piezoelectric properties of the P2 1 2 1 2 1 orthorhombic phase in cadmium diiodate (δ-Cd(IO 3) 2) by combining experiments and first-principles based calculations. We revisited the nature of the electronic band gap and suggest an indirect band gap with a value of 4.6 eV. The infrared and Raman responses were measured and the different phonon modes assigned. To date, the δ-Cd(IO 3) 2 piezoelectric response remains unknown. We reported the different mechanisms involved in its piezoelectric response from the density functional perturbation theory. The highest value of the piezoelectric-stress and piezoelectric-strain constants in the zero Kelvin limit is predicted for e 41 =-0.27 C/m 2 and d 41 =-10.32 pC/N. These sizable values associated with the thermal stability (no phase transition up to the thermal decomposition at 550°C) and a relative large electronic band gap make δ-Cd(IO 3) 2 a potential candidate for piezoelectric applications.

We use atomistic computer simulations to provide a microscopic description of the brittle failure of amorphous materials, and we assess the role of rare events and quenched disorder. We argue that brittle yielding originates at rare soft regions, similarly to Griffiths effects in disordered systems. We numerically demonstrate how localized plastic events in such soft regions trigger macroscopic failure via the propagation of a shear band. This physical picture, which no longer holds in poorly annealed ductile materials, allows us to discuss the role of finite size effects in brittle yielding and reinforces the similarities between yielding and other disorder-controlled nonequilibrium phase transitions.
