We apply reverse engineering techniques in the time domain THz regime to recover the multilayer structure of a sunflower leaf. Results are successful and allow to analyze the time sunflower behavior under water stress

We introduce a Domain Decomposition Spectral Method (DDSM) as a solution for Maxwell’s equations in the frequency domain. It will be illustrated in the framework of the Aperiodic Fourier Modal Method (AFMM). This method may be applied to compute the electromagnetic field diffracted by a large-scale surface under any kind of incident excitation. In the proposed approach, a large-size surface is decomposed into square sub-cells, and a projector, linking the set of eigenvectors of the large-scale problem to those of the small-size sub-cells, is defined. This projector allows one to associate univocally the spectrum of any electromagnetic field of a problem stated on the large-size domain with its footprint on the small-scale problem eigenfunctions. This approach is suitable for parallel computing, since the spectrum of the electromagnetic field is computed on each sub-cell independently from the others. In order to demonstrate the method’s ability, to simulate both near and far fields of a full three-dimensional (3D) structure, we apply it to design large area diffractive metalenses with a conventional personal computer.

Quantum spin Hall insulators (QSHIs) based on HgTe and three-layer InAs/GaSb quantum wells (QWs) have comparable bulk band-gaps of about 10--18~meV. The former however features a band-gap vanishing with temperature, while the gap in InAs/GaSb QSHIs is rather temperature-independent.Here, we report on the realization of large inverted band-gap in strained three-layer InAs/GaInSb QWs. By temperature-dependent magnetotransport measurements of gated Hall bar devices, we extract a gap as high as 45 meV. Combining local and non-local measurements, we attribute the edge conductivity observed at temperatures up to 40 K to the topological edge channels with equilibration lengths of a few micrometers. Our findings pave the way toward manipulating edge transport at high temperatures in QW heterostructures.

Abstract Since the emergence of graphene, we have seen several proposals for the realization of Landau lasers tunable over the terahertz frequency range. The hope was that the non-equidistance of the Landau levels from Dirac fermions would suppress the harmful non-radiative Auger recombination. Unfortunately, even with this non-equidistance an unfavorable non-radiative process persists in Landau-quantized graphene, and so far no cyclotron emission from Dirac fermions has been reported. One way to eliminate this last non-radiative process is to sufficiently modify the dispersion of the Landau levels by opening a small gap in the linear band structure. A proven example of such gapped graphene-like materials are HgTe quantum wells close to the topological phase transition. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate Landau emission from Dirac fermions in such HgTe quantum wells, where the emission is tunable by both the magnetic field and the carrier concentration. Consequently, these results represent an advance in the realization of terahertz Landau lasers tunable by magnetic field and gate-voltage.

Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy has been used to investigate the vibrational spectra of polycrystalline sodium magnesium chlorophyllin - one of the natural derivatives of chlorophyll - over the temperature range 88 K–298 K. A number of well-resolved absorption peaks were observed in the frequency range 0.2–2.5 THz, which are interpreted as originating from mixed character of intramolecular and intermolecular vibration modes. As the temperature is increased, the observed absorption features resolve into broader peaks. The peak centered at 1.83 THz shifts towards higher frequencies, indicating that for this feature, significant intermolecular anharmonicity exist.
