We present a low temperature magnetoconductance study of a submicron hall bar made from an AlGaAs/InGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. Experiments were performed at very low temperature (120 mK), with a magnetic field ranging from OT to 13.5 T. In the presence of a quantizing magnetic field, at the transition between two quantized Hall plateaus, a succession of sharp peaks is detected in the Hall signal RH and in the longitudinal resistance R-L. The peaks appearing on the high-v side of the R-L transition appear to be different from the peaks appearing on the low-v side. They mainly differ by their temperature dependence. On the high-v side of the RL transition, the temperature evolution of the peaks is typical for resonant tunneling through a single state in one of the antidots that are progressively formed when the initially occupied LL is emptied. On the low v of the transition, by contrast, the temperature dependence is different. This may be related to the asymmetry of the density of states, or to additional inelastic processes.

We calculate the density of states of a two-dimensional electron gas located at the interface of a strongly disordered GaAlAs/GaAs heterojunction. The disorder potential is created by two delta doped layers. The first layer includes the parent donors which provides the well with electrons and creates a smooth disorder potential. The second layer is doped with either acceptor or donor impurities, and is located inside the well, thus creating a strongly disordered potential. We calculate the density of states in the presence of a magnetic field of arbitrary strength by taking into account all perturbative terms in the fifth Klauder's approximation. We find an anharmonic spectrum, strongly asymmetric, for the Landau level density of states. At low field, the attractive potential creates the well-known band tails or impurity bands. At higher field, we show that impurity bands are also created by repulsive potentials. We discuss the consequences of the anharmonicity and asymmetry on physical properties in the quantum Hall effect regime.

We present preliminary experiments on Aharonov-Bohm interferometers. We have made mesoscopic semiconductor GaAs/GaAlAs rings in which the interference phenomenon still exists in presence of a high magnetic field. We have calculated the density of states (DOS) of a two-dimensional electron gas in a perpendicular magnetic field, using a multiple scattering method, in the ultraquantum limit. We have considered doped and disordered 2D systems. The results of the scattering method are compared with direct simulations of disordered samples. Our study presents experimental measurements of the contact and longitudinal voltage drops in Hall bars, as a function of the current amplitude. We are interested in the heating phenomenon which takes place before the breakdown of the quantum Hall effect, i.e. the pre-breakdown regime. Two types of samples has been investigated, at low temperature (4.2 and 1.5 K) and high magnetic field (up to 13 T). The Hall bars have several different widths, and our observations clearly demonstrate that the size of the sample influences the heating phenomenon. By measuring the critical currents of both contact and longitudinal voltages, as a function of the filling factor (around i = 2), we highlight the presence of a high electric field domain near the source contact, which is observable only in samples whose width is smaller than 400 mum. We have used silicon impurities in an aluminum arsenide barrier to probe an adjacent two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). A single impurity acts as a local spectrometer and scans the local density of states of the 2DEG. Magnetotransport experiments have been performed at low temperature with a magnetic field B applied along the direction of the current. Current-voltage characteristics strongly depend on B and reveal the formation of Landau levels (LLs).
