The interplay of soft responsive particles, such as microgels, with nanoparticles (NPs) yields highly versatile complexes that show great potential for applications, ranging from plasmonic sensing to catalysis and drug delivery. However, the microgel–NP assembly process has not been investigated so far at the microscopic level, thus hindering the possibility of designing such hybrid systems a priori. In this work, we combine state-of-the-art numerical simulations with experiments to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms taking place when microgel–NP assembly is controlled by electrostatic interactions and the associated effects on the structure of the resulting complexes. We find a general behavior where, by increasing the number of interacting NPs, the microgel deswells up to a minimum size after which a plateau behavior occurs. This occurs either when NPs are mainly adsorbed to the microgel corona via the folding of the more external chains or when NPs penetrate inside the microgel, thereby inducing a collective reorganization of the polymer network. By varying microgel properties, such as fraction of cross-linkers or charge, as well as NP size and charge, we further show that the microgel deswelling curves can be rescaled onto a single master curve, for both experiments and simulations, demonstrating that the process is entirely controlled by the charge of the whole microgel–NP complex. Our results thus have a direct relevance in fundamental materials science and offer novel tools to tailor the nanofabrication of hybrid devices of technological interest.

Some original poly(tetrasubstituted imidazole)s incorporating different units were synthesized and characterized. These materials were obtained via a cascade polycondensation process assisted by microwave irradiation that was developed by our team. This time, we integrated two well-known chromophore structures into the macromolecular backbone, which were benzothiadiazole (BTD) and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DKPP). These new polymers were fully characterized: their chemical structures were confirmed using NMR spectroscopy and their thermal, optical and electrochemical properties were investigated and compared with a reference polymer containing a phenyl spacer instead of the mentioned chromophore units. These materials were found to exhibit a large Stokes shift of up to 350 nm. Furthermore, a polymer presenting large absorption on the UV–visible range and an emission close to the near-infrared region was obtained by coupling the mentioned moieties. According to the established properties of this latter polymer, it presents a potential for applications in biological imaging or optoelectronic devices.

Despite several decades of development, microfluidics lacks a sealing material that can be readily fabricated, leak-tight under high liquid water pressure, stable over a long time, and vacuum compatible. In this paper, we report the performances of a micro-scale processable sealing material for nanofluidic/microfluidics chip fabrication, which enables us to achieve all these requirements. We observed that micrometric walls made of SU-8 photoresist, whose thickness can be as low as 35 $μ$m, exhibit water pressure leak-tightness from 1.5 bar up to 5.5 bar, no water porosity even after 2 months of aging, and are able to sustain under $10^{-5}$ mbar vacuum. This sealing material is therefore reliable and versatile for building microchips, part of which must be isolated from liquid water under pressure or vacuum. Moreover, the fabrication process we propose does not require the use of aggressive chemicals or high-temperature or high-energy plasma treatment. It thus opens a new perspective to seal microchips where delicate surfaces such as nanomaterials are present.

The evaporation of drops of colloidal suspensions plays an important role in numerous contexts, such as the production of powdered dairies, the synthesis of functional supraparticles, and virus and bacteria survival in aerosols or drops on surfaces. The presence of colloidal particles in the evaporating drop eventually leads to the formation of a dense shell that may undergo a shape instability. Previousworks propose that, for drops evaporating very fast, the instability occurs when the particles form a rigid porous solid, constituted of permanently aggregated particles at random close packing. To date, however, no measurements could directly test this scenario and assess whether it also applies todrops drying at lower evaporation rates, severely limiting our understanding of this phenomenon and the possibility of harnessing it in applications. Here, we combine macroscopic imaging and spaceand time-resolved measurements of the microscopic dynamics of colloidal nanoparticles in drying drops sitting on a hydrophobic surface, measuring the evolution of the thickness of the shell and the spatial distribution and mobility of the nanoparticles. We find that, above a threshold evaporationrate, the drop undergoes successively two distinct shape instabilities, invagination and cracking. While permanent aggregation of nanoparticles accompanies the second instability, as hypothesized in previous works on fast-evaporating drops, we show that the first one results from a reversible glass transition of the shell, unreported so far. We rationalize our findings and discuss their implicationsin the framework of a unified state diagram for the drying of colloidal drops sitting on a hydrophobic surface.

Due to their atomically excellent structure and sp2-hybridization, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have exceptional mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. Single-walled CNTs (swCNTs) have recently gained interest as an intriguing host for the nanoscale confinement of fluids, with a variety of unexpected phenomena such as spontaneous filling, frictionless mass transport, unusual phase diagram etc[1]. The majority of these phenomena are still under debate and require experimental confirmation. However, it is challenging in this field to find experimental methods sensitive enough to carry out measurements at the level of individual nanotubes. The electronic properties of swCNTs are demonstrated to be sensitive to their diameter, defects, doping, adsorbates, and environment via swCNT field effect transistors (swCNT-FETs)[2], [3].In this contribution, we show that individual carbon nanotube field effect transistors (CNTFET) are the perfect tool for achieving this goal, enabling for the first time to accurate identification of water confined inside the nanotube. By investigating the electrical performances of several unopened and opened CNTFETs submitted to different atmosphere and temperature treatments, such as dry air, humidity, secondary vacuum, and current annealing, we demonstrate that it is possible to distinguish between water being outside and inside of the nanotube, just outside, or the nanotube free from water. Hence, we found that secondary vacuum and current annealing both shift the threshold gate voltage of opened swCNTs towards more negative values, however, the secondary vacuum had no effect on closed swCNTs compared to current annealing. In conclusion, the current annealing process is essential to distinguish water adsorbed outside from water confined inside swCNT. We demonstrate that this behavior is uniform across all devices’ metallicities, assuming that the nanotube’s surface has been pre-cleaned using current annealing. We will also discuss the mechanism behind the coupling of electronic transport and the presence of water.Our findings open up the possibility of using CNTFET to address long-standing issues in the nanofluidic community regarding the behavior of water confinement at the nanoscale, and also to use them for reliable, sensitive, and selective chemical and biological sensors.Reference:[1] T. We explore the impact of three water-soluble polyelectrolytes (PEs) on the flow of concentrated suspensions of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) microgels with thermoresponsive anionic charge density. By progressively adding the PEs to a jammed suspension of swollen microgels, we show that the rheology of the mixtures is remarkably influenced by the sign of the PE charge, PE concentration and hydrophobicity only when the temperature is raised above the microgel volume phase transition temperature Tc, namely when microgels collapse, they are partially hydrophobic and form a volume-spanning colloidal gel. We find that the original gel is strengthened close to the isoelectric point, attained when microgels are mixed with cationic PEs, while PE hydrophobicity rules the gel strengthening at very high PE concentrations. Surprisingly, we find that polyelectrolyte adsorption or partial embedding of PE chains inside the microgel periphery occurs also when anionic polymers of polystyrene sulfonate with high degree of sulfonation are added. This gives rise to colloidal stabilization and to the melting of the original gel network above Tc. Contrastingly, the presence of polyelectrolytes in suspensions of swollen, jammed microgels results in a weak softening of the original repulsive glass, even when an apparent isoelectric condition is met. Our study puts forward the crucial role of electrostatics in thermosensitive microgels, unveiling an exciting new way to tailor the flow of these soft colloids and highlighting a largely unexplored path to engineer soft colloidal mixtures.

Fundamental understanding of macroscopic properties of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) remains difficult due to the complex interplay of microscopic dynamics and structure, namely interfacial layer relaxations and three-dimensional nanoparticle arrangements. The effect of surface modification by alkyl methoxysilanes at different grafting densities has been studied in PNCs made of poly(2-vinylpyridine) and spherical 20 nm silica nanoparticles (NPs). The segmental dynamics has been probed by broadband dielectric spectroscopy, and the filler structure by small-angle X-ray scattering and reverse Monte Carlo simulations. By combining the particle configurations with the interfacial layer properties, it is shown how surface modification tunes the attractive polymer-particle interactions: bare NPs slow down the polymer interfacial layer dynamics over a thickness of ca. 5 nm, while grafting screens these interactions. Our analysis of interparticle spacing and segmental dynamics provides unprecedented insight into the effect of surface modification on the main characteristics of PNCs: particle interactions and polymer interfacial layers.
