We report the detection of individual emitters in silicon belonging to seven different families of optically active point defects. These fluorescent centers are created by carbon implantation of a commercial silicon- on-insulator wafer usually employed for integrated photonics. Single photon emission is demonstrated over the 1.1–1.55 μm range, spanning the O and C telecom bands. We analyze their photoluminescence spectra, dipolar emissions, and optical relaxation dynamics at 10 K. For a specific family, we show a constant emission intensity at saturation from 10 K to temperatures well above the 77 K liquid nitrogen temperature. Given the advanced control over nanofabrication and integration in silicon, these individual artificial atoms are promising systems to investigate for Si-based quantum technologies.

We investigate the structure of gluten polymer-like gels in a binary mixture of water/ethanol, $50/50$ v/v, a good solvent for gluten proteins. Gluten comprises two main families of proteins, monomeric gliadins and polymer glutenins. In the semi-dilute regime, scattering experiments highlight two classes of behavior, akin to standard polymer solution and polymer gel, depending on the protein composition. We demonstrate that these two classes are encoded in the structural features of the proteins in very dilute solution, and are correlated with the presence of proteins assemblies of typical size tens of nanometers. The assemblies only exist when the protein mixture is sufficiently enriched in glutenins. They are found directly associated to the presence in the gel of domains enriched in non-exchangeable H-bonds and of size comparable to that of the protein assemblies. The domains are probed in neutron scattering experiments thanks to their unique contrast. We show that the sample visco-elasticity is also directly correlated to the quantity of domains enriched in H-bonds, showing the key role of H-bonds in ruling the visco-elasticity of polymer gluten gels.

We numerically study the relaxation dynamics and associated criticality of non-Brownian frictionless spheres below jamming in spatial dimensions $d=2$, $3$, $4$, and $8$, and in the mean-field Mari-Kurchan model. We discover non-trivial finite-size and volume fraction dependences of the relaxation time associated to the relaxation of unjammed packings. In particular, the relaxation time is shown to diverge logarithmically with system size at any density below jamming, and no critical exponent can characterise its behaviour approaching jamming. In mean-field, the relaxation time is instead well-defined: it diverges at jamming with a critical exponent that we determine numerically and differs from an earlier mean-field prediction. We rationalise the finite $d$ logarithmic divergence using an extreme-value statistics argument in which the relaxation time is dominated by the most connected region of the system. The same argument shows that the earlier proposition that relaxation dynamics and shear viscosity are directly related breaks down in large systems. The shear viscosity of non-Brownian packings is well-defined in all $d$ in the thermodynamic limit, but large finite-size effects plague its measurement close to jamming.

Objective: In the event of neural injury, the homologous contralateral brain areas may play a compensatory role to avoid or limit the functional loss. However, this dynamic strategy of functional redistribution is not clearly established, especially in the pathophysiological context of diffuse low-grade glioma. Our aim here was to assess the extent to which unilateral tumor infiltration of the insula dynamically modulates the functional connectivity of the contralesional one.Methods: Using resting-state functional connectivity MRI, a seed-to-ROI approach was employed in 52 insula-centered glioma patients (n = 30 left and 22 right) compared with 19 age-matched healthy controls.Results: Unsurprisingly, a significant decrease of the inter-insular connectivity was observed in both patient groups. More importantly, the analyses revealed a significant increase of the contralesional insular connectivity towards both cerebral hemispheres, especially in cortical areas forming the visual and the sensorimotor networks. This functional redistribution was not identified when the analyses were performed on three control regions for which the homologous area was not impaired by the tumor. This overall pattern of results indicates that massive infiltration of the insular cortex causes a significant redeployment of the contralesional functional connectivity.Conclusion: This general finding suggests that the undamaged insula plays a role in the functional compensation usually observed in this patient population, and thus provides compelling support for the concept of homotopic functional plasticity in brain-damaged patients.

The thin film of life that inhabits all plastics in the oceans, so-called “plastisphere,” has multiple effects on the fate and impacts of plastic in the marine environment. Here, we aimed to evaluate the relative influence of the plastic size, shape, chemical composition, and environmental changes such as a phytoplankton bloom in shaping the plastisphere abundance, diversity and activity. Polyethylene (PE) and polylactide acid (PLA) together with glass controls in the forms of meso-debris (18 mm diameter) and large-microplastics (LMP; 3 mm diameter), as well as small-microplastics (SMP) of 100 μm diameter with spherical or irregular shapes were immerged in seawater during 2 months. Results of bacterial abundance (confocal microscopy) and diversity (16S rRNA Illumina sequencing) indicated that the three classical biofilm colonization phases (primo-colonization after 3 days; growing phase after 10 days; maturation phase after 30 days) were not influenced by the size and the shape of the materials, even when a diatom bloom (Pseudo-nitzschia sp.) occurred after the first month of incubation. However, plastic size and shape had an effect on bacterial activity (3H leucine incorporation). Bacterial communities associated with the material of 100 μm size fraction showed the highest activity compared to all other material sizes. A mature biofilm developed within 30 days on all material types, with higher bacterial abundance on the plastics compared to glass, and distinct bacterial assemblages were detected on each material type. The diatom bloom event had a great impact on the plastisphere of all materials, resulting in a drastic change in diversity and activity. Our results showed that the plastic size and shape had relatively low influence on the plastisphere abundance, diversity, and activity, as compared to the plastic composition or the presence of a phytoplankton bloom.
