Amorphous–amorphous transformations under pressure are generally explained by changes in the local structure from low- to higher-fold coordinated polyhedra1–4. However, as the notion of scale invariance at the critical thresholds has not been addressed, it is still unclear whether these transformations behave similarly to true phase transitions in related crystals and liquids. Here we report ab initio-based calculations of compressed silica (SiO2) glasses, showing that the structural changes from low- to high-density amorphous structures occur through a sequence of percolation transitions. When the pressure is increased to 82 GPa, a series of long-range (‘infinite’) percolating clusters composed of corner- or edge-shared tetrahedra, pentahedra and eventually octahedra emerge at critical pressures and replace the previous ‘phase’ of lower-fold coordinated polyhedra and lower connectivity. This mechanism provides a natural explanation for the well-known mechanical anomaly around 3 GPa, as well as the structural irreversibility beyond 10 GPa, among other features. Some of the amorphous structures that have been discovered mimic those of coesite IV and V crystals reported recently5,6, highlighting the major role of SiO5 pentahedron-based polyamorphs in the densification process of vitreous silica. Our results demonstrate that percolation theory provides a robust framework to understand the nature and pathway of amorphous–amorphous transformations and open a new avenue to predict unravelled amorphous solid states and related liquid phases7,8.

La mécanique statistique explique désormais les transitions de phase se produisant dans des substances simples à l'équilibre thermodynamique. Néanmoins, la transition vitreuse, observée universellement dès lors qu'un liquide est refroidi ou comprimé suffisamment rapidement pour éviter sa cristallisation, est toujours source d'intenses recherches. Dans l'approximation de champ moyen, le ralentissement des systèmes vitreux est la conséquence de l'émergence d'un paysage d'énergie libre rugueux avec un nombre exponentiellement grand de minima correspondant aux états métastables. Ces derniers dictent également les propriétés thermodynamiques des liquides surfondus ainsi que le comportement hors-équilibre des verres. Ils sont cependant mal définis au-delà du champ moyen : ils ont une durée de vie finie et une extension spatiale limitée. Le travail de cette thèse participe à l'effort de définir et de caractériser les états métastables en dimension finie par les simulations numériques et les travaux analytiques. Nous exploitons dans un premier temps la thermodynamique contrainte des liquides surfondus dans la construction de Franz et Parisi. La théorie champ moyen prédit que l'existence d’états métastables se manifeste par une ligne de transition de phase et un point critique dans un diagramme des phases étendu. Nous utilisons les simulations numériques et nous montrons que les résultats champ moyen survivent malgré l'introduction de fluctuations de dimension finie. Nous sommes capables de caractériser le point critique et d'en donner sa classe d'universalité ainsi que sa dimension critique inférieure. Nous étudions ensuite en détail la définition du paramètre d'ordre associé à cette transition analytiquement et numériquement pour orienter d'éventuelles futures études mais également pour mieux comprendre la structure gros-grains du paysage d’énergie libre de verres modèles. Finalement, nous nous intéressons à la thermodynamique des liquides surfondus en présence d'une contrainte thermodynamique locale et nous révélons d'importantes fluctuations spatiales. Dans un second temps, nous étudions la dynamique des liquides surfondus proches de leur transition vitreuse en mettant à profit un algorithme récent pour générer des configurations d'équilibre de liquides modèles à très basses températures. Nous montrons que la dynamique de relaxation résulte de l'apparition distribuée de régions mobiles qui croissent par facilitation. Dans un troisième temps, nous étudions les propriétés de verres hors-équilibre, et nous mettons en place des protocoles numériques qui permettent de générer des verres beaucoup plus stables que ceux obtenus usuellement en simulations par vieillissement.

Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study the static and dynamic properties of spherical nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in a disordered and polydisperse polymer network. Purely repulsive and weakly attractive polymer–NP interactions are considered. It is found that for both types of particles, the NP dynamics at intermediate and long times is controlled by the confinement parameter C = σN/λ, where σN is the NP diameter and λ is the dynamic localization length of the cross-links. Three dynamical regimes are identified: (i) for weak confinement (C ≲ 1), the NPs can freely diffuse through the mesh; (ii) for strong confinement (1 ≲ C ≲ 3), NPs proceed by means of activated hopping; (iii) for extreme confinement (C ≳ 3), the mean-squared displacement shows on intermediate time scales a quasi-plateau because the NPs are trapped by the mesh for very long times. Escaping from this local cage is a process that depends strongly on the local environment, thus giving rise to an extremely heterogeneous relaxation dynamics. The simulation data are compared with the two main theories for the diffusion process of NPs in gels. Both theories give a very good description of the C dependence of the NP diffusion constant but fail to reproduce the heterogeneous dynamics at intermediate time scales.

In a recent computer study, we have shown that the combination of spatially heterogeneous dynamics and kinetic facilitation provides a microscopic explanation for the emergence of excess wings in deeply supercooled liquids. Motivated by these findings, we construct a minimal empirical model to describe this physics and introduce dynamic facilitation in the trap model, which was initially developed to capture the thermally-activated dynamics of glassy systems. We fully characterise the relaxation dynamics of this facilitated trap model varying the functional form of energy distributions and the strength of dynamic facilitation, combining numerical results and analytic arguments. Dynamic facilitation generically accelerates the relaxation of the deepest traps, thus making relaxation spectra strongly asymmetric, with an apparent "excess" signal at high frequencies. For well-chosen values of the parameters, the obtained spectra mimic experimental results for organic liquids displaying an excess wing. Overall, our results identify the minimal physical ingredients needed to describe excess processes in relaxation spectra of supercooled liquids.
