The efforts of development of high resolution spatially resolved spectroscopic techniques is aimed at investigating the structural changes related to damage development in glasses, especially concerning the interaction with environmental corrosive molecules like water under elevated stress. This is aimed at complementing the AFM investigations which are presently effectuated around propagating crack tips or post-mortem fracture surfaces, which are limited to surface observations. The understanding of the space and time scales involved in the damage processes, around propagating crack tips or indentation marks, is of fundamental importance for improving the strength and durability of glass products, for which brittleness is
the main limiting point.
